ROHNERT PARK, Calif-
Skylynn Myers hit the eventual game-winning double in game one and
Rochelle Vanyi and
Kayla Ledford hit back-to-back home runs in the nightcap to help Sonoma State complete the four-game series sweep of Cal State East Bay on Saturday afternoon at the Seawolf Softball Field. The Seawolves start the conference season perfect at 4-0 in the CCAA while improving to 7-2 overall. The Pioneers fall to 3-5 (0-4 CCAA).
Game One
After a flyout to start the game, Cal State East Bay got three consecutive singles to load the bases against starting pitcher
Julianne Martinez. After forcing Mishka Hamor to pop up to first baseman
Ali Palermo, the Pioneers' Dani Foster poked a RBI single to right field that scooted under
Brittany Martinez, allowing two more runs to cross the plate. Cal State East Bay took an early 3-0 lead.
Despite giving up four hits in the first inning and seven more throughout the game, J. Martinez settled down and didn't allow another Pioneer run for the rest of the ballgame. She struckout seven of the 34 batters she faced, tossing 134 pitches.
Down 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, B. Martinez woke the bats up with a leadoff double to right center field.
Danielle Lowe pinch ran for B. Martinez and advanced to third on a
Rachel Gaber groundout to the right side of the infield. Myers then laid down a perfect bunt and was able to reach first when the throw home to attempt to throw out Lowe failed. It cut the Pioneer lead to two at 3-1.
Vanyi then came up and laced a single to left field, but Cal State East Bay left fielder Breezy Johnson misplayed the ball, allowing it to roll to the fence while Myers and Vanyi scampered around the bases to tie the game at 3-3.
In the Seawolf fifth, Danielle D'Eccliss hit a routine pop up in foul territory, but CSUEB first baseman Devin Salmones dropped the easy out, allowing D'Eccliss one more pitch. She made the most of it, drawing a walk on the next pitch.
Vanessa Currie then followed with a walk and both D'Eccliss and Currie advanced to second and third, respectively, when B. Martinez re-entered the game and grounded out to first base. Gaber then fouled out which should have been the third out of the inning, but D'Eccliss' at bat allowed Myers to come up and hit the eventual game-winning double.
The Pioneers never threatened in their half of the sixth or seventh innings, thanks to the dominant pitching of J Martinez as the Seawolves held on for the 5-3 win.
Game Two
It was the
Samantha Lipperd show in game two, as the SSU starting pitcher tossed the first five innings, allowing just one hit and striking out eight of the 16 batters she faced. She got help by the Seawolf offense in the bottom of the fourth when Vanyi smashed a three-run home run over the left field fence, scoring Myers and Gaber. Ledford then came up following a Cal State East Bay pitching change and smashed the second ball she saw off Catherine Schorn, getting just inside the left field foul pole for the solo home run.
With the 4-0 lead,
Ciara Becerril was called upon to pitch the final two innings and retired the first batter she saw. However, Kassy Winger took Becerril deep on a 2-2 count, as the Pioneers trailed 4-1. Becerril retired the last five batters she faed, though, and got an insurance run from her teammates.
Jesse Talaugon struckout swinging, but reached first base on a wild pitch that allowed Vanyi to score from third and the Seawolves led, and eventually won, 5-1.
Lipperd and Becerril combined to allow just two hits (one apiece) and Becerril struck out one. Vanyi, Ledford and Myers each had two hits and accounted for all of Sonoma State's six hits.
Sonoma State will host Bay Area-rival San Francisco State (2-7, 0-4 CCAA) for a four-game series on Friday and Saturday at the Seawolf Softball Field. First pitch both days is scheduled for Noon.
