Box Score: Cal Poly Pomona 55, Sonoma State 48
POMONA, Calif- With upset still fresh in mind from Friday's win, the Sonoma State women's basketball team threw everything they could at conference-leading Cal Poly Pomona and led for the first 30 minutes of the ballgame, but the Broncos proved to be too much down the stretch, defeating the Seawolves 55-48 on Saturday night at Kellogg Gym in Pomona. SSU falls to 7-15 overall and 5-13 in conference play while the Broncos improve to a CCAA-best 16-1 and 19-2 overall.
The Seawolves scored the game's first five points and held the lead until the Broncos finally evened the score at 12-12. Cal Poly Pomona couldn't take its first lead of the game, though, as Sonoma State jumped back out in front and extended the lead to seven (28-21) with two minutes remaining, holding onto it through the halftime buzzer.
It was the defense that kept Sonoma State in the game, holding Cal Poly Pomona to just 27.6 percent from the field on 8 of 29 shooting. Meanwhile, the offense continued to put points on the board, hitting 10 of 25 shots (40 percent).
In the second half,
Jaclyn Bisordi gave the Seawolves their largest lead of the game at nine (34-25), but the Broncos went on a 15-2 run to pull ahead by four at 40-36 with 8:35 remaining in the game.
Taylor Vigil hit a three-pointer on SSU's next possession, but it would be as close as Sonoma State would get for the rest of the night.
Vigil led the team with 11 points and Bisordi scored nine. Sonoma State ended the night shooting 34.7 percent from the floor (17-49), hitting only seven shots in the final 20 minutes. Cal Poly Pomona shot 33.3 percent (17-51), including 9 of 22 in the second half. The Broncos went on to outscore the Seawolves 34-20 in the final period, which proved to be the difference.
The conference's scoring leader Reyana Colson led all scorers with 19 points and Megan Ford added 16 points for Cal Poly Pomona.
Sonoma State will play two more games on the road before returning home in two weeks to wrap up the regular season. The Seawolves will first travel to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday at 5:30 p.m. before taking on San Francisco State on Saturday in San Francisco.
