CARSON, Calif- Senior Kyle Jones hit the eventual game-winning two-run double in the eighth inning of game one and freshman Garrett Schwartz knocked in five runs with three hits on the day, helping Sonoma State to a 9-7 and 9-2 sweep of host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday in Carson. The Seawolves remain perfect this season at 7-0 and start the conference season at 2-0. The Toros, meanwhile, fall to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA.

Sonoma State exploded for 18 runs and 26 hits in the doubleheader -- nine runs and 13 hits in each game.

Game One: Sonoma State 9, Cal State Dominguez Hills 7

In the opener, Sonoma State drew first blood with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Schwartz, scoring Alex Todd for the 1-0 lead. Two innings later, Cameron Cook singled to right center, scoring Randy Wells from second for the two-run lead. The Seawolves tacked on another run in the fifth after a mammoth solo blast by O'Koyea Dickson to go up 3-0.

Cal State Dominguez Hills got a run back in their half of the fifth after a throwing error by Steven Filippi in left field allowed Oscar Soriano to cross the plate to cut the Seawolf lead to two.

In the next half inning, Ryan Morales ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Schwartz, putting the SSU lead back up to three at 4-1. However, the Toros would mount a comeback, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth, chasing Thomas Lee from the hill when CSUDH tied the game at 4-4.

The game wouldn't stay tied for long. In the next half inning, Cook knocked in two more runs on a single to right center before Schwartz brought home his third RBI of the game on an infield single. Sonoma State regained its three-run advantage at 7-4, but it proved to be insurance as Cal State Dominguez Hills came right back with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score at 7-7.

For the seventh straight half inning, at least one run crossed the plate, but this time, in the top of the eighth, it was Jones who came through with the two-RBI double for the 9-7 lead. Enter Joey Van Cleave.

Van Cleave retired six of the seven batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings, earning the two-inning save -- his second save of the season. He struckout two.

Sonoma State ended the game with a season-high 13 hits, six off the bats of Cook and Dickson (three apiece). Jones and Wells had two hits each. Lee tossed five and one-thirds innings, giving up five hits, four runs (three earned) while walking four and striking out four. Jacob Fiss (1-0) also appeared on the mound for the Seawolves, throwing one and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned) with two walks and a strikeout. He earned the win in relief.

Game Two: Sonoma State 9, Cal State Dominguez Hills 2

In the nightcap, Kyle Cerrudo got the Seawolves on the scoreboard first when he doubled to left center in the top of the second, scoring Cook for the 1-0 lead. Sonoma State then scored four runs in the fourth after two hits and five walks allowed by Toro starting pitcher Josh Corrales. Cerrudo had another RBI single in the inning and Scott Collins came up to deliver a two-RBI double as well, the only two hits in the inning.

Cal State Dominguez Hills got a pair of runs back in the next two innings, but Sonoma State would tack on four more runs in the top of the sixth to run away with the 9-2 win.

Kenny Arnerich tossed a solid six innings, giving up six hits and the two runs (just one earned), while walking two and striking out three. Phil Liniger replaced Arnerich in the seventh and shut down the Toros in order, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Schwartz went 2 for 3 in game two, with three RBI and two runs scored. Cerrudo and Collins each had two hits and two RBI while Jones added two RBI as well.

Sonoma State and Cal State Dominguez Hills will wrap up their four-game series on Saturday at Toro Field with two nine-inning games, starting at 11 a.m.
