Box Score: #24 Cal State Monterey Bay 69, Sonoma State 52
SEASIDE, Calif-
Amrallina Rowland scored a career-high 11 points and brought down five rebounds to lead Sonoma State, but host Cal State Monterey Bay went on a 24-10 run in the final ten minutes of regulation to snatch the 69-52 on Friday night at the Kelp Bed in Seaside.
The Seawolves remain solid in eighth place in the conference standings at 5-14 (7-16 overall) after losses by San Francisco State and Cal State East Bay on Friday. The Otters, ranked 24th in this week's USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll, improves to a conference-best 21-2 overall, but remains a half-game behind Cal Poly Pomona in the CCAA standings at 17-2.
After a pair of baskets by
Elizabeth Day and a three-pointer by
Jaclyn Bisordi, Sonoma State jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game. Cal State Monterey Bay would strike back with six straight points to close the gap to just one point at 7-6, but the Seawolves would extend their lead back to six a minute later.
From then on, the Otters would enjoy a 13-0 run over the next four and a half minutes to lead 19-12 with under ten minutes left in the opening half. The CSUMB lead would eventually reach nine points on a couple of occasions, but five straight points by Rowland and a free throw by
Oly Larkin got SSU within three points (30-27) with 21 seconds left in the period. The Otters' Julie Heurung would hit a shot with two ticks left before halftime as Cal State Monterey Bay held a five-point lead at 32-27.
The Otter lead would then stretch to as much as 10 points at 39-29 several minutes into the final half, but the comeback Seawolves would cut into the deficit to trail by only three points on two separate occasions, including a 45-42 disadvantage with 10:41 showing on the game clock.
It was then when nationally-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay started pulling away, beginning its 24-10 run to end the game.
Rowland and
Aly Henington were the only Sonoma State players in double-figures, as Henington chipped in with 10 points to complement Rowland's 11. The Seawolves were outrebounded by a considerable margin, 43-27, as the Otters had two players (Heurung and Holly Holcomb) grab ten boards each. CSUMB also corralled 19 offensive rebounds, which helped the hosts to outscore the Seawolves, 24-9, in second chance points.
Heurung (20 points and 10 rebounds) and Holcomb (10 points and 10 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles for Cal State Monterey Bay. Michelle Santizo added 12 points in the winning effort.
Sonoma State, who is looking for its first CCAA tournament appearance since 2008, will travel north to face San Francisco State (4-19, 4-15 CCAA) on Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. from the Main Gymnasium in San Francisco.
