Seawolves Stay Perfect; Complete Sweep of Toros

Garrett Schwartz had three hits including his first home run on Sunday.
Box Score:  Sonoma State 10, Cal State Dominguez Hills 5

CARSON, Calif-  Sonoma State won their ninth consecutive game to open the season on Sunday, completing an impressive series sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills with a 10-5 win at Toro Field in Carson.  The Seawolves extend their best start in program history to 9-0, 4-0 CCAA.  The Toros, an NCAA Regional participant in 2010, fall to 4-7, 0-4 CCAA.

The Seawolves ended up scoring 41 runs in the four-game series against the Toros, however Sunday's finale didn't start out well for the boys in blue.  Following an RBI double by Kyle Jones that put Sonoma up 1-0 in the top of the first, the Toros got to Seawolf starter Joshua Nervis for four runs in the bottom of the inning, though just two of them were earned.

A Garrett Schwartz home run to lead off the second cut the lead to 4-2 and the score would stay there until the Sonoma offense came to life in the fifth.  RBI singles by Jones and Randy Wells brought the Seawolves even before Schwartz connected on a two-run single to put Sonoma in front, 6-4.

Dominguez Hills got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, but another four-run outburst by Sonoma in the eighth put the game away.  In the eighth, Steven Filippi had a two-run single, O'Koyea Dickson had an RBI single, and Jones came up with a sac fly.

Schwartz finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  The big game boosted his average to .409 on the season.  Kyle Cerrudo (.429), Dickson (.414), and Jones (.414) will also leave Carson with averages above .400.

After a shaky first inning, Nervis calmed down and earned the win with a five-inning performance.  Southpaw Ian Ocon pitched four innings on one-hit relief to earn his first save of the season.

Jonathan Keener led the Toros with two hits while teammate David Fair was tagged with the defeat.

The Seawolves will return to Southern California next week to take on Cal Poly Pomona in a four-game series before returning home to host Cal State L.A. on March 11th.
