ROHNERT PARK, Calif-
Brittany Martinez scored Danielle D'Eccliss on a sacrifice fly in the first inning of game one and it proved to be the difference for Sonoma State, as the Seawolves earned a 1-0 victory in the series-opener against San Francisco State on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The nightcap was suspended in the 13th inning, due to darkness, as both teams were deadlocked at 2-2. The completion of the game will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, prior to games three and four of the four-game series,
With the game one victory, Sonoma State remained unbeaten in conference play at 5-0 while improving to 8-2 overall. San Francisco State fell to 2-8 (0-5 CCAA). The Seawolves are the only remaining undefeated team in conference play.
Game One: Sonoma State 1, San Francisco State 0
After D'Eccliss reached base on a Gator throwing error, she stole second then advanced to third on another throwing error a couple of batters later, setting the scene for B. Martinez to come up with the RBI sacrifice fly to left field. It would prove to be all Sonoma State would need, as last week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Pitcher of the Week,
Samantha Lipperd shut down the Gator lineup.
Lipperd (4-1) tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out eight of the 25 batters she faced in the contest. She also walked two, which was just her fifth and sixth walks of the season in 33 innings pitched this season. Only SF State's Kendra Wood and Kylie Grabowski would get the hits off Lipperd
Kayla Ledford led the way for the Seawolves offensively, going 2 for 3 in the game, while D'Eccliss and
Rachel Gaber also got hits in the win.
San Francisco State starter Ashley Jackson (1-5) pitched all six innings and earned the loss despite the fact that the only run she gave up was an unearned run. Jackson allowed four hits and struck out three.
Game Two: Sonoma State 2, San Francisco State 2 (Top 13)
The Gators drew first blood in the top half of the first inning on a single to left center by Alyssa Esquibel, scoring Kylie Herrada, who drew a leadoff walk from SSU starter
Ciara Becerril. It would be the only run given up by Becerril, as she tossed four and a third innings before giving way to
Julianne Martinez in fifth when SFSU put two runners on after a single and a walk. J. Martinez got out of the jam without incident.
Sonoma State knotted the game at 1-1 when
Skylynn Myers scored
Rochelle Vanyi on a RBI single to right center. Neither team would score again until San Francisco State took a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth when Grabowski singled up the middle, scoring Kelsey Murikami.
With just two outs left before surrendering the game to the Gators,
Jesse Talaugon came up big with a RBI double that scored Myers to knot the game at 2-2.
The pitching duel between J. Martinez and Jackson, who replaced Marisa Ibarra in the fifth inning, continued until darkness began to fall. J. Martinez has pitched seven and a third innings, giving up just four hits and one run, walking two and striking out eight. Jackson has given up nine hits and the two Seawolf runs in the second game. She has struckout five and walked two.
Talaugon and Myers have three hits apiece in the game.
The completion of the game will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Seawolf Softball Field. It will serve as a warm up to games three and four between the Seawolves and Gators, set to kickoff following the completion of the 13-inning marathon currently in progress.
