ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Needing a victory to stay in playoff contention, the Sonoma State women's basketball team played with spirit and high emotion on Wednesday night, showing that they are worthy of being a playoff team. The Seawolves, led by the 12 points of
Jaclyn Bisordi cruised to a convincing 52-38 victory over visiting Cal State L.A.
Sonoma State (8-17, 6-15 CCAA) needs just one more victory to clinch the eighth and final spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament next week. The Golden Eagles were eliminated from the playoff picture, falling to 7-18 overall and 4-17 in conference play.
RIght from the opening tipoff, the Seawolves controlled the game, sprinting out to a large 11-0 lead five minutes into the game. Cal State L.A., though, quickly turned things around and erased the 11-point deficit to just two points at 11-9. CSULA eventually got to within one point two possessions later, but SSU finished out the half on a 8-2 run to lead 21-14.
It was all Sonoma State in the second half, jumping out to its largest lead of the game at 16 points (34-18) with 15:59 remaining on the game clock and the Seawolf lead remained in double digits the rest of the way.
Bisordi dropped in 12 points on the night, complemented by the nine point, ten rebound effort of
Taylor Vigil, who was a pioint shy of her first double-double this season. Sonoma State shot 38.2 percent from the floor (21-55), while holding Cal State L.A. to just 18.1 percent (13-72), the lowest percentage by a SSU opponent this season. The Golden Eagles hit only four of 29 shots from beyond the arc (13.8 percent).
Cal State L.A. was led by the 16 points of Lacy Ramon while Alisha Belt had a game-high 18 rebounds.
Sonoma State will host Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-21, 4-17 CCAA), who lost to Humboldt State, 70-45, on Wednesday in Arcata, dashing the Toros playoff hopes. The Seawolves "magic number" is one and will clinch the eighth spot in the eight-team CCAA tournament with a victory over CSUDH on Friday night.
In addition to the final home game this season, it will be Senior Night, as Sonoma State will honor its only senior,
Oly Larkin, in a pre-game ceremony, beginning at approximately 5:25 p.m.
