McKINLEYVILLE, Calif- After a 3-1 loss to open the four-game series at Humboldt State, the Sonoma State softball team bounced back with a convincing 7-0 victory over the Lumberjacks in the nightcap on Saturday afternoon at McKinleyville High School in McKinleyville. With the split, the Seawolves go to 11-4 overall and 8-2 in the CCAA. The 'Jacks go to 8-5 (3-3 CCAA).
Skylynn Myers and
Brittany Martinez had huge days at the plate for the Seawolves on Saturday. Myers went 5 for 7 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored while B. Martinez was 4 for 6 with a double, three RBI and one run scored, all combined in the doubleheader.
Humboldt State 3, Sonoma State 1
Myers got the Seawolves onto the scoreboard first with a RBI single in the third inning, scoring
Danielle Lowe for the 1-0 lead. The Lumberjacks' Kirsten Nouzovsky then got the run back in their half of the third on a RBI single, scoring Alicia Reid.
Both teams then remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Nikki Ketteringham drew a walk from SSU starting pitcher
Samantha Lipperd with two outs. Chrissy Stalf then hit a soft one-hopper back to Lipperd, but Lipperd misplayed the ball and allowed Stalf to to reach base on the error. Nouzovsky then delivered a two-RBI double, scoring Ketteringham and Stalf, which would prove to be the game-winning hit, giving Humboldt State the 3-1 win.
Lipperd (5-2) was tagged with the loss after tossing six innings, allowing four hits, three runs (none of which were earned) while striking out nine Lumberjacks and walking just two. Myers went 2 for 4 with the lone RBI of the game.
Nouzovsky was 2 for 3, bringing home all three RBI for Humboldt State in the game.
Sonoma State 7, Humboldt State 0
In the nightcap, the Seawolf offense exploded for seven runs in the game. It started with two consecutive doubles by Myers and B. Martinez, giving the Seawolves the 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Myers then delivered again in the third, bringing home Danielle D'Eccliss on a RBI single followed by a RBI single by
Vanessa Currie to grab the 3-0 lead. Then, with the bases loaded, HSU starting pitcher Jessica George was called for an illegal pitch, bringing home B. Martinez for the fourth run of the game.
Just as the had all day long, Myers and B. Martinez stepped up their offense lined RBI singles to the outfield, increasing the Sonoma State lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning. The Seawolves then grabbed one more run in the sixth on another RBI single by B. Martinez for the eventual 7-0 win.
Julianne Martinez (5-2) earned the victory, tossing four innings of shutout ball, striking out three and walking two while giving up three hits.
Ciara Becerril came in to pitch the final three innings and scattered just two hits and struck out one.
Humboldt State got five hits in the game -- three from Stalf and two from Felicia Viveiros. George (2-2) got the loss, giving up 14 hits and five of the seven runs while striking out just two.
Sonoma State and Humboldt State will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
