McKINLEYVILLE, Calif-
Skylynn Myers had another huge day offensively, going 4 for 7 with a double, home run, four RBI and four runs scored in the twinbill, but Sonoma State had to settle for another split with host Humboldt State on Sunday. The Seawolves move to 12-5 overall and 9-3 in the CCAA, while the Lumberjacks go to 9-6 (4-4 CCAA).
Humboldt State 7, Sonoma State 6 (9 innings)
After Sonoma State knotted the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning, both teams were held scoreless until Humboldt State's Geneva Perrine smashed a walkoff solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Lumberjacks the 7-6 win.
It was all Humboldt to start the game, as the hosts jumped all over Sonoma State starter
Ciara Becerril, plating six runs in the first two innings of the ballgame. However, Becerril calmed down and allowed just one hit combined in the third, fourth and fifth innings, opening the door for the Seawolf offense to begin its comeback.
They did just that, cutting into the six-run lead with three runs in the top of the fifth, thanks to a two-RBI triple by
Tatiana Pizarro. She eventually scored on the same play after a throwing error allowed her to cross the plate, helping the Seawolves trail by three at 6-3.
In the fifth,
Rochelle Vanyi blasted a two-run home run, scoring
Jesse Talaugon, moving the Seawolves to within one run at 6-5. An inning later, Talaugon ripped a RBI single, scoring Myers to tie up the game at six.
Both
Samantha Lipperd, who came on in relief of Becerril in the sixth, and Humboldt State pitchers Vaneza Hoover and Kristina Lewis combined to keep both offenses off the scoreboard in the extra innings. That is until Perrine delivered the game-winner over the outfield fence.
Talaugon went 3 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored, while Myers and
Vanessa Currie had two hits apiece. The Seawolves had a lot of missed opportunities, though, leaving 12 runners on base, as opposed to four for the Lumberjacks. Becerril gave up seven hits, six of which came in the first two innings. She surrendered six runs and one walk. Lipperd came in for three and a third innings, allowing just two hits, the one run, while striking out eight of the 13 batters she faced.
Sarah Fox had three hits and three RBI for Humboldt State in the win and Chrissy Stalf added two hits and two RBI. Lewis (3-1) earned the victory in relief after appearing in the final two innings, giving up three Seawolf hits.
Sonoma State 9, Humboldt State 1 (6 innings)
In the final game of the four-game set, Sonoma State again found its power, as Myers, Talaugon and
Ali Palermo all smashed home runs in the game. Just as HSU did in the first game, SSU led 6-0 after two innings of play. A Talaugon solo home run in the fifth and a Myers two-run single in the sixth forced the mercy rule on Humboldt State after the sixth inning.
Lipperd (6-3) tossed the complete game, scattering three hits, giving up just one unearned run while striking out six. Myers had another huge game, going 2 for 4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
Brittanie Verissimo added two hits in the victory for Sonoma State as well.
Lewis (3-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up the first four Sonoma State runs in one and one-thirds innings.
Sonoma State will step outside of conference play when it travels to San Francisco on Wednesday to face Pacific West Conference-foe Academy of Art. A doubleheader between the Seawolves and the Urban Knights is set to begin at 3 p.m.
