TURLOCK, Calif- For the third time in her young career, Samantha Lipperd didn't give up a hit, tossing seven shutout innings while striking out 14 batters, as Sonoma State defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 4-0, in Friday's opener at Warrior Field in Turlock. The Seawolves had to settle for a split, though, losing a wild one, 12-7, in the nightcap.

The season of domination continues in the pitching circle for Lipperd, as she recorded her third career no-hitter and the first of the 2011 season. Improving to 10-3 on the year, she struckout 14 of the 25 batters she faced, one shy of tying her season's best mark. Lipperd did allow five base runners on three walks, a hit by pitch and a defensive error. Just like her last outing, Lipperd did not allow a runner beyond second base.

Meanwhile, it took a while for the Seawolves bats to heat up, scattering just two hits in the first four innings. However, in the fifth, Brittanie Verissimo and Ali Palermo singled to lead off the inning. Jesse Talaugon would then reach base on a fielder's choice, but Verissimo was thrown out at third. With one out and runners on first and second, Danielle Lowe singled to left field, loading the bases for Kayla Ledford. Ledford then ripped a double to left center that cleared the bases and putting Sonoma State up 3-0.

In the Seawolf seventh, Palermo tacked on another run with a solo home run to left field as SSU, after Lipperd retired the side in the bottom of the seventh, went on to win, 4-0. Ledford, Verissimo and Palermo had two hits apiece, accounting for six of the eight by Sonoma State in the opener.

Brittani Weatherford (6-9) was tagged with the loss after going the distance, allowing the eight hits, four runs. She struckout just one in the contest.

Cal State Stanislaus 12, Sonoma State 7

In a game that featured 19 runs, it was the Warriors who had the upper hand against SSU pitchers Julianne Martinez and Ciara Becerril.

After being no-hit in the first game, Cal State Stanislaus took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, after two walks, two hit by pitches and a three-RBI triple by Lauren Nagle, chasing J. Martinez from the game. Sonoma State would get a run back in the second on a RBI single by Megan Konieczka, but the Warriors would score two more runs in the bottom of the second on Becerril in relief to lead 6-1.

The Seawolves wouldn't go away. Verissimo, who went 2 for 3 with three RBI and a run scored in the nightcap, laced a RBI double to center field, scoring Rochelle Vanyi, who also doubled in the inning. Vanessa Currie then brought home Verissimo on a infield single, as the Seawolves chipped away at the lead, trailing 6-3.  In its next at bat, Sonoma State took the 7-6 lead on a Vanyi two-RBI single and a Verissimo two-RBI double.

J. Martinez re-entered into the game in the Stanislaus fourth after Becerril put the first two runners on via a walk. After a quick strikeout, J. Martinez was taken yard by Kiley Mendez for a three-run home run and the Warriors would never trail in the ball game again, leading 9-7. Cal State Stanislaus added three more runs in the fifth, cruising to the lopsided 12-7 win.

Becerril (1-2) got the loss in relief after the runners she was responsible for, came around to score on the Mendez home run in the fourth. She went two innings, gave up four hits, four runs, walked three and struckout four. J. Martinez tossed four innings, allowed five hits, eight runs (seven earned), walked three and struckout five.

Offensively, Lowe, Vanyi, Verissimo and Konieczka had two hits each, eight of the 12 by the Sonoma State bats.

Kristan Burns (5-5) earned the victory for Cal State Stanislaus despite giving up ten hits, seven runs (just three earned) and walking two. Weatherford came on in relief in the sixth inning, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Jordan Flora, Burns and Nagle had two hits apiece.

Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus will wrap up its four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at Noon.
