ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Kenny Arnerich tossed eight innings of shutout ball, giving up just five hits while striking out eight in the opener and Kyle Cerrudo came through with a walkoff, bases loaded single in the nightcap, helping Sonoma State secure the 5-0 and 3-2 wins over visiting Cal State L.A. on Saturday at Seawolf Diamond. The 11th-ranked Seawolves rise to 14-2 overall and 9-2 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles fall to 15-8 and 10-5.

It was the Arnerich show in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, as the senior from Alameda went eight complete innings and allowed five hits, no runs, he walked three and struckout eight. He was replaced in the ninth by Phil Liniger, who retired the side, including one strikeout.

As the Sonoma State pitchers dominated the mound at Seawolf Diamond, the offensive did some work of their own. Randy Wells put the first run on the scoreboard with a RBI single up the middle that scored Alex Todd. A batter later, Kyle Cerrudo came up big with a infield RBI single, scoring O'Koyea Dickson to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Dickson, Kyle Jones and Wells led off the inning with three consecutive doubles, two of which brought a run across the plate, putting Sonoma State up 4-0 and chasing CSULA starting pitcher David Arredondo from the game.

The Seawolves then tacked on another run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Dickson with no outs. Nick Rodarte came on in relief of Cliff Quick, who took over for Arredondo in the sixth. Rodarte, facing a bases loaded situation with no outs, retired three SSU hitters in order to stop the bleeding. It would prove to be the final offensive threat for both teams, as the Seawolves earned the 5-0 shutout victory.

Steven Filippi went 3 for 3 and walked in his other plate appearance while Dickson, Wells and Cerrudo had two hits apiece. Arnerich improved to a perfect 3-0 with the win.

Cal State L.A.'s Chad Nacapoy led the visitors with two of the visitor's five hits. Arredondo (2-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing ten hits, four runs in his five innings of work.

#11 Sonoma State 3, Cal State L.A. 2

In the latter game of the doubleheader, the Seawolves again struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second on a throwing error by the Golden Eagles' second baseman.

Cal State L.A. would then begin chipping away at the lead, starting with a sacrifice fly by Joe Park in the top half of the third inning. CSULA would threaten with more runs in the inning with bases loaded and one out, but SSU starting pitcher Kendall Davis worked himself out of the jam.

In the fifth, the visitors would knot the game at 2-2 when Jordan Castro would score on a throwing error by Seawolf shortstop Todd. It knocked Davis from the game, but Brian Bordagaray would come in to again help SSU out of a minor jam, forcing a groundout with two runners on base.

Sonoma State had a shot to break the game wide open in the fifth, as they loaded the bases with two outs, but CSULA starter Gabriel Asakura fanned Cameron Cook to end that threat and leave three runners on the base paths.

In the final SSU at bat, Thomas Landeros came on in relief of Asakura, but two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs, setting the scene up for Cerrudo to come away with the game-winning hit. In an attempt to force out the lead runner at home on a possible ground ball, Cal State L.A. elected to put centerfielder Park in behind second base as a fifth infielder. It wouldn't work, however, as Cerrudo smashed a 1-2 pitch deep over the left center fielders head to give the Seawolves the exciting 3-2 win.

Dickson and Cerrudo accounted for four of Sonoma State's eight hits in the contest. Bordagaray (3-0) earned the victory in relief.

Sonoma State and Cal State L.A. will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday. The first pitch has been moved to 10 a.m., due to forecasted rain later in the afternoon.
