Kayla Ledford blasted a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give Sonoma State the 2-1 victory in Saturday's opener, but for the fourth straight time, the Seawolves were unable to pull off the doubleheader sweep after a 6-3 defeat by Cal State Stanislaus to end the four-game series in Turlock. SSU moves to 18-9 overall and 14-6 in the CCAA. The Warriors go to 13-15 (10-10 CCAA).
Sonoma State 2, Cal State Stanislaus 1
After three and a half scoreless innings to start Saturday's doubleheader, the Warriors finally broke through against the Seawolves' starting pitcher
Samantha Lipperd when Jordan Flora smashed a leadoff home run to take the 1-0 lead.
It would be the closest that Cal State Stanislaus would get to scoring again the rest of the opener, as Lipperd tossed seven innings, giving up just three hits (including Flora's home run) while striking out 12 batters, the third straight appearance in which she has fanned ten or more.
It the Sonoma State sixth,
Brittanie Verissimo singled up the middle with two outs, setting up the two-run shot by Ledford to put the Seawolves ahead 2-1. It was the Lipperd show from then on out as she retired all six Warrior hitters she faced in the final two innings, helping her to improve to 11-3 this season.
Verissimo and Ledford both had two hits for SSU, accounting for four of the team's six hits in the opener. Cal State Stanislaus pitcher Brittani Weatherford (6-10) was tagged with the loss after giving up the home run in the sixth. She allowed six hits while striking out four.
Cal State Stanislaus 6, Sonoma State 3
In the series finale, the Warriors again drew first blood, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to a RBI single by Kristan Burns and a couple of fielding errors by Verissimo at third base.
Sonoma State would get a run back in the second inning after
Rochelle Vanyi tripled to leadoff the frame, then came home on a RBI single by
Skylynn Myers. The one-run deficit would be short-lived, however, as Cal State Stanislaus scored three more runs on SSU starting pitcher
Julianne Martinez -- another home run by Flores, this time a three-run blast.
Down 5-1 heading into the third,
Megan Konieczka launched her first collegiate home run to lead off the inning, putting the Seawolves down three at 5-2. An inning later,
Jesse Talaugon scored from third base on a failed pickoff attempt by the Stanislaus catcher, closing the gap to just 5-3.
Flora came through again in the bottom half of the fourth, with a RBI single that gave the Warriors the 6-3 lead and the eventual 6-3 win after the Seawolves failed to get anything going offensively in their final two at bats.
Ledford and Vanyi had two hits for Sonoma State in the loss. J. Martinez (6-4) went the distance, giving up the six runs (five earned) with a walk and six strikeouts.
Sarah Locarnini, Flora and Brittney Rickles all went 2 for 3 in the contest. Burns (6-5) got the win, tossing five innings, scattering five hits, allowing three runs (two earned). Weatherford came on in relief to snatch her second save of the season.
It was the fourth doubleheader in a row that Sonoma State won the first game of the twinbill, but failed to complete the sweep.
Sonoma State will return home for a single game with Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before hosting a huge four-game series with rival Chico State on Friday and Saturday.
