Seawolves Fall In Extra Innings To Golden Eagles

Kyle Jones had a RBI and a run scored in Sunday's loss to CSULA.
Box Score: Cal State L.A. 8, #11 Sonoma State 4 (10 innings)

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- After falling behind 3-0 early in the game, Sonoma State came back with a run in the third and three runs in the fifth to lead 4-3, but Cal State L.A. plated five unanswered runs, four of which came in the top of the tenth inning to knock off the Seawolves, 8-4, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) baseball action on Sunday at Seawolf Diamond.

Ranked at No. 11 in last week's Collegiate Baseball Newspaper/NCAA Division II Top 30 Poll, Sonoma State suffered its first home loss of the season in nine games, falling to 14-3 overall and 9-3 in the CCAA. Cal State L.A., which had lost the first three games of the series, improves to 16-8 and 11-5 in conference play.

The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the four-game series after a Manny Acosta three-run home run that snuck just over the right field fence in the top of the second off of starting pitcher Joshua Nervis. It was the first home run given up by the Sonoma State pitching staff in the first 503 opponent at bats this season.

Jones got a run back in the third with a RBI single through the right side, scoring Steven Filippi from second. Then, the Seawolves took advantage of the misfiring Golden Eagle pitching staff, drawing five walks along with two wild pitches, one of which with the bases loaded. SSU scored all three runs on just one hit in the inning -- a single by Ryan Morales to leadoff the inning.

A half inning later, CSULA's Noe Flores knotted the game back up at 4-4 with a solo shot to deep left field.

The game would then turn into a pitching duel between the Seawolves' Ian Ocon and the Golden Eagles' Nick Rodarte, both of which came on in relief in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

It wasn't until the top of the tenth inning when Cal State L.A. finally scored the go-ahead runs on a rwo-RBI double by Cliff Quick with the bases loaded and no outs. The visitors tacked on two more runs in the frame; a sacrifice fly by Brian Moon and a RBI sacrifice bunt by Flores.

With three outs to work with, Rodarte retired Randy Wells to start the inning before allowing a one-out single to Kyle Cerrudo. Rodarte (1-1), who got the win in five and a thirds innings of relief, forced Cameron Cook to line out and pinch hitter Garrett Schwartz to strikeout swinging to end the game.

The Seawolves managed just three hits in the ballgame. Jones had the RBI single and then scored a run later in the contest. Cerrudo and Morales also came up with hits for SSU in the loss. Nervis started for the Seawolves, tossing three innings, giving up two hits and three runs, walked four and struckout two. Ocon (1-1) went six-plus innings, scattering three hits and allowing four runs. He walked two and struckout seven. Joey Van Cleave came on in the tenth to allow a hit and a run.

For Cal State L.A., Acosta went 2 for 3 with the three-run shot in the second inning. Golden Eagles starter Nathan Pickett and Anthony Lopez combined to give up two hits, four runs and nine walks in four and two thirds innings.

Sonoma State will hit the road next week for a four-game series at Cal State Monterey Bay to face former SSU assistant coach Walter White in Seaside. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
