Game Two
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- After a 10-0 blasting by sixth-ranked Western Washington in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader, the Sonoma State softball punched right back in game two, exploding for eight runs and riding the dominant, one-hit effort by
Samantha Lipperd in the pitching circle, giving the Seawolves the 8-0 win and forcing the split with the Vikings. SSU moves to 19-10 overall while WWU sits at 21-4 this season.
#6 Western Washington 10, Sonoma State 0 (5 innings)
It was the Erika Quint show in the opener, as the right-hander from Western Washington improved her unblemished record to 15-0 in the circle this season. She gave up just one Sonoma State hit -- a single by
Vanessa Currie in the fifth. Quint allowed just two base runners in the five innings she pitched, striking out nine Seawolves in the victory.
Neither team could get anything going offensively in the first three innings, but the Vikings exploded for four runs in the fourth off SSU starter
Julianne Martinez and then tacked on six more runs in the fifth to take the large 10-0 lead. Western Washington scored the ten runs on 13 hits -- five Vikings had two hits apiece, including Karli Baumgartner, who led the way with three RBI.
Currie's hit to lead off the fifth gave Sonoma State some life, but Quint retired three in a row to secure the 10-0 victory with a eight-run mercy rule in effect.
Brittanie Verissimo was the only other Sonoma State player that reached base, it was via a walk in the second.
Sonoma State 8, #6 Western Washington 0 (5 innings)
It was Lipperd's time to shine in the second game, as she matched Quint's first game effort, giving up just one Western Washington hit -- a double by Krista Bickar in the second. Lipperd also bested Quint's effort of nine strikeouts with ten of her own.
While Lipperd shut down the high-powered Viking offense, the Seawolves finally broke the bats out for three runs in the first inning. After a leadoff walk to
Danielle Lowe and two straight stolen bases by Lowe,
Kayla Ledford walked then stole second, putting runners on second and third with no outs. During the next batter, Lowe was able to scamper home on a wild pitch by WWU starter Devyn Baker. Ledford then moved over to third on a groundout by
Skylynn Myers before stealing home when Viking catcher Samantha Rutherford threw down to third basemen Jordan Emmil.
Later in the inning, with the Seawolves up 2-0 and Verissimo and Currie on first and third, respectively, pitcher Erika Hendron, who replaced Baker, allowed Currie to score after an illegal pitch.
In the second, Sonoma State tacked on three more runs on three consecutive RBI singles by Ledford, Myers and
Rochelle Vanyi, putting the Seawolves in front, 6-0.
After two scoreless innings, SSU put up two more runs to earn the eight-run mercy rule victory -- sacrifice flies by
Ali Palermo and
Jesse Talaugon.
It gave Lipperd her 12th win of the victory, as she improved to 12-3 this season. Vanyi, Verissimo and Talaugon had two hits apiece for Sonoma State, who had nine in the ballgame.
