ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Ali Palermo hit a walk-off, game-winning solo home run to break up a scoreless tie in the eighth inning of Friday's opener before Sonoma State completed the doubleheader sweep of Cal State San Bernardino, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two to win, 5-2. The Seawolves improve to 14-5 overall and 11-3 in the CCAA while the Coyotes have lost six straight to drop to 11-9 overall (7-7 CCAA).

Sonoma State 1, Cal State San Bernardino 0 (8 innings)

It was all about the pitching in game one of the four-game series between Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino, but it was Samantha Lipperd who outdueled Cassidy Lee. Lipperd (7-3), who came into Friday's matchup as the best strikeout pitcher in the conference, did what she does best -- strikeout batters. In the eight innings of shutout softball, Lipperd fanned ten of the 27 batters she faced, allowing just one infield single. The Coyotes' Britney Butler got the only hit off Lipperd -- a line drive that glanced off Lipperd's glove and dribbled out to the second base area.

Meanwhile, her counterpart, Lee (4-3), matched Lipperd inning-for-inning, keeping the Seawolves off the scoreboard. She gave up just three hits and struckout three before Palermo launched Lee's 94th pitch of the game over the left field wall. Kayla Ledford, Brittany Martinez and Brittanie Verissimo accounted for the three other hits for Sonoma State.

Sonoma State 5, Cal State San Bernardino 2

After another scoreless inning in the first, Sonoma State finally put a run on the board early -- a RBI by Vanessa Currie when she got hit by the pitch with the bases loaded. It would be all the Seawolves would get, though, stranding three runners on base. SSU would go on to leave nine on base in the nightcap.

Cal State San Bernardino finally broke through in the fifth, scoring two runs to take the 2-1 lead. A RBI single by Jacquelyn Holtzclaw, followed by Jamie Leffingwell drawing a bases loaded walk put the Coyotes up by a run. CSUSB threatened for more runs, though, with the bases still loaded and one out, but Butler flied out to Danielle D'Eccliss in center field and the D'Eccliss throw home to get Alex Mitchell tagging up was in time, allowing pitcher Julianne Martinez to get out of the jam.

In the bottom of the sixth, a Currie single, a Rachel Gaber walk and a D'Eccliss single loaded the bases with no outs against Brianne Godfredson, who came on in relief of Carly Land at the start of the inning. Lee then replaced Godfredson, but walked Ledford, bringing home the tying run.

Skylynn Myers then flew out to left field, which brought Tatiana Pizarro home for the go-ahead run and 3-2 lead. It would eventually become the game winning run, but the Seawolves weren't finished. Rochelle Vanyi, who broke the all-time home run record last weekend at Humboldt State, came up to bat and laced a double to center field, scoring two insurance runs and putting Sonoma State up 5-2.

In the seventh, J. Martinez closed out the game, retiring all three batters she faced on eight pitches to earn the victory and improve to 6-2 this season. She gave up just four hits and two runs, while walking three and striking out two.

Godfredson (1-2) was tagged with the loss, as she was responsible for the last three Sonoma State runs.

Vanyi went 3 for 4 in the contest, with the aforementioned two RBI. She also scored once. Myers went 2 for 3 with a RBI as well.

Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino will wrap up the four-game series on Saturday, with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
