POMONA, Calif- Kyle Cerrudo went 2 for 3 and scored the eventual game-winning run in seventh inning to give Sonoma State the 3-2 victory, but the Cal Poly Pomona pitching staff shut the Seawolves down in the nightcap, handing SSU its first loss of the 2011 season, 3-0. The Seawolves, who are ranked No. 15 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Newspaper/NCAA Division II Top 30 Poll, move to 11-1 overall and 6-1 in the CCAA. The Broncos go to 11-6 (5-6 CCAA).

Sonoma State 3, Cal Poly Pomona 2

The Seawolves drew first blood on Saturday, scoring two runs in the top of the second, thanks to a sacrifice fly RBI by Cerrudo and a Garrett Schwartz RBI single up the middle. The Broncos punched back in their half of the fourth inning, though, scoring two runs on a RBI groundout and a subsequent interference call.

Neither team could not get much going offensively throughout the game, but the Seawolves were able to score the go-ahead run in the seventh when Cerrudo scored on an error.

From then on out, it was the pitchers doing what pitchers do. Kenny Arnerich made the start for SSU, tossing five and a thirds innings, allowing just four hits and two runs (both of which were unearned). He struckout five and walk two, but got the no-decision. It was Brian Bordagaray who came on in relief in the sixth and finished the game, surrendering just one hit in three and two-thirds innings of work. Bordagaray (2-0) struckout five and earned the victory as the pitcher of record when Cerrudo scored the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Cerrudo's 2 for 3 led the Seawolf offense, as he had the aforementioned RBI and run scored. Seven other Sonoma State players recorded a hit in the victory. Kyle Jones and Randy Wells came around to cross the plate for SSU.

Erick Ruvalcaba (0-1) was tagged with the loss after pitching six-plus innings and giving up the third and final Sonoma State run in the seventh. Travis Taijeron accounted for two of the Broncos five hits in the contest.

Cal Poly Pomona 3, Sonoma State 0

In what would end up being the first loss by Sonoma State in the 2011 season, the Broncos plated a run in the first when Mike Santora scored on a throwing error by Seawolf third baseman Randy Wells. Then, in the fourth, Santora would lace a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield, scoring Taylor Larson and Allen Rodarte.

With the 3-0 lead, CPP's Kevin Bosson (3-2) went four and a thirds innings, allowing six Sonoma State hits while walking one and striking out ten Seawolves. He gave way to Jake Reed, who earned his first save of the season, scattering three hits, walking two and striking out two in two-plus innings of work. Offensively, Santora had two for the four Bronco hits in the game.

For the Seawolves, who outhit the Broncos 9-4, O'Koyea Dickson, Wells and Jones had two hits apiece, but Sonoma State left 14 runners on base. Kendall Davis (0-1) was dealt the loss after just 3.2 innings of work, allowing just two hits, three runs (two earned).

Sonoma State and Cal Poly Pomona will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday with a single game. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Pomona. The Seawolves will then return to Seawolf Diamond next weekend, hosting Cal State L.A. in a four-game set, starting on Friday.
