ROHNERT PARK, Calif-
Samantha Lipperd tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven in a 2-0 victory in game one, but Cal State San Bernardino exploded with nine runs in the nightcap, taking game two 9-6, salvaging a win in the four-game series that concluded on Saturday. The Seawolves fall to 15-6 overall and 12-4 in the CCAA while the Coyotes snap a seven-game losing streak, improving to 12-10 and 8-8.
Sonoma State 2, Cal State San Bernardino 0
In Saturday's opener,
Brittanie Verissimo got the scoring started for Sonoma State, blasting a solo home run in the bottom of the second, giving the Seawolves the early 1-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth,
Rochelle Vanyi reached base on an infield single and
Jesse Talaugon struckout swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch by Cassidy Lee. A few pitches later, Vanyi stole third and the subsequent throw went wild, allowing Vanyi to score the second run, giving SSU the 2-0 lead and eventual win.
Meanwhile, Lipperd (8-3) continued her dominant pitching in the circle, allowing just two hits by Cal State San Bernardino -- both off the bat of Alex Mitchell. Lipperd totalled seven strikeouts and walked just one batter. She ran into a bit of trouble in the third, loading the bases with no outs, but three straight strikeouts ended the only threat for the Coyotes. Lipperd's counterpart, Lee (4-4), gave up five hits, two runs (one earned) while walking one and striking out three.
Verissimo went 2 for 2 in the contest, with the aforementioned solo home run in the second.
Kayla Ledford,
Rochelle Vanyi and
Brittany Martinez also got a hit in the victory.
Cal State San Bernardino 9, Sonoma State 6
In the nightcap, Vanyi got the Seawolves on the board first with a RBI single scoring
Vanessa Currie in the bottom of the first. The Coyotes then got the run back in the second after a couple of errors allowed Jamie Leffingwell to score, knotting the game at 1-1.
After a scoreless inning for the Seawolf offense, Cal State San Bernardino then added three runs on the scoreboard with a RBI single by Alyssa Flores and then a RBI double by Stefanie Pace. Sonoma State came right back, though, and tied the game at 4-4 with RBI singles by Verissimo and
Ali Palermo and
Skylynn Myers was able to score on an errant throw by catcher Jamie Roland when Verissimo stole second.
The wheels then came off in the Coyote fourth, as Jacqueline Holtzclaw batted in a run on a fielder's choice before Priscilla Curiel smashed a three-run home run, putting Cal State San Bernardino up big, 8-4.
Sonoma State's never say die attitude showed itself in the late innings as Palermo began the bottom of the sixth by lining a home run over the right field fence to cut the lead down to three.
Jesse Talaugon then doubled, scoring
Danielle Lowe from second. The Seawolves trailed by just two at 8-6, however, it would be all they would get. The Coyotes added an insurance run in the seventh on a Mitchell RBI single, helping CSUSB to the 9-6 win.
Danielle D'Eccliss went 3 for 4 in the nightcap with a run scored while Ledford, B. Martinez and Palermo each got two hits apiece.
Julianne Martinez got the start for Sonoma State, but was relieved by
Ciara Becerril in the fourth. Lipperd then came on to pitch the final three and two thirds innings, but the trio combined to surrender the nine runs and 11 hits while walking two and striking out five.
Carly Land (4-3) got the win for Cal State San Bernardino, tossing five complete innings and scattering 11 Sonoma State hits. Brianne Godfredson came on in relief and earned her first save of the season, pitching the final two innings. Pace went 3 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Sonoma State will step outside of conference play on Wednesday when it travels to San Francisco to face Academy of Art, rescheduled from last week's rainout. The Seawolves will then travel to Turlock to take on Cal State Stanislaus on Friday and Saturday in a four-game series.
