Lipperd, Seawolves Sweep Away Wildcats On Monday

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Behind another stellar pitching performance by sophomore pitcher Samantha Lipperd, the Sonoma State softball team earned a sweep over No. 25 Chico State on Monday, including a 5-0 win in game one and a thrilling 6-5 ten-inning victory in the nightcap. The Seawolves improve to 28-15 this season and 18-8 in the CCAA. The Wildcats fall to 23-11 and 14-8 in conference play.

The sweep of Chico State snapped a streak of eight straight doubleheader splits by Sonoma State and the Seawolves have risen back to second place in the CCAA standings behind UC San Diego with ten games remaining in the regular season.

The Seawolves got things going in the bottom of the first inning on two consecutive walks to Danielle Lowe and Kayla Ledford. Skylynn Myers bunted Lowe and Ledford, putting runners on second and third with one out. After Chico State pitcher Sam Baker struckout Rochelle Vanyi, Baker was called on an illegal pitch, allowing Lowe to score and Ledford to advance to third. A couple of pitches later, Brittanie Verissimo singled up the middle to score Ledford and the Seawolves led 2-0.

After three scoreless innings, Sonoma State added a run in the fifth one two consecutive doubles by Myers and Vanyi to give SSU the 3-0 lead, chasing Baker from the game. In the sixth, Megan Konieczka doubled to center field off of Sarah Marcia, scoring Vanessa Currie from second base, which chased Marcia from the circle. Kacie McCarthy came in and allowed a RBI infield single to Ledford, scoring Konieczka.

As the offense gave Lipperd some run support, she did her part to shut down the Wildcat lineup, allowing just three hits in the opener. No runner advanced beyond second base as Lipperd struckout 13 of the 24 batters she faced and didn't allow a walk.

Eight of the nine Seawolves in the lineup reached base safely via a hit -- Sonoma State outhit Chico State 8-3.

Baker (17-4) was tagged with just her fourth loss of the season allowing six hits and three runs. She walked three and struckout four in four and a thirds innings pitched.

The Wildcats, after being shut out in the first game, didn't waste any time putting a run up on the board in the second game. Sam Quadt doubled with one out then came around to score on a single by Diana Payan followed by an error by the centerfielder Lowe, allowing Quadt to round third base and score. Chico State would tack on another run to grab a 2-0 lead in the fourth with an infield single by Jackie Munoz.

It wouldn't take long for the Seawolves to strike back as Currie laid down a bunt with runners on second and third, allowing Vanyi to come home and score to trail by a run at 2-1. Ali Palermo then flied out to left field, scoring Verissimo to knot the game at two.

Chico State would grab the lead again with a run in the fifth on another fielding error by Sonoma State to lead 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Lowe smacked a two-run double to give the Seawolves the 4-3 lead, followed up by a throwing error by first baseman Rachel Failla that allowed Lowe to score from second on a groundout by Ledford.

Down 5-3 in their final at bat, Chico State tied the score up with a two-out two RBI double by Baker, sending the game into extra innings.

Neither team got anything going until Brittany Martinez poked a one-out double to left field in the bottom of the tenth inning, followed by a walk to Currie. With runners on first and second, including Danielle D'Eccliss, who pinch ran for B. Martinez, Chico State pitcher Jessica McDermott threw a wild pitch, allowing D'Eccliss and Currie to move up a base. Then, after an 11-pitch at bat, Palermo came through with the game-winning single to left field, scoring D'Eccliss to defeat the nationally-ranked Wildcats, 6-5.

Lipperd (18-5) again earned the victory, as she pitched all 17 innings on Monday. She fanned 12 Wildcats in the nightcap, upping her total to 25 for the day. She did allow 10 hits and five runs (three earned), while walking two. Vanyi and Palermo had two hits to lead the Seawolves in game two. Palermo and Lowe had a team-high two RBI.

McDermott (5-4) got the loss after going the distance, scattering eight SSU hits, allowing six runs (four earned). She walked five and struck out three. Payan led the way with three hits offensively for Chico State.

Sonoma State and Chico State will wrap up the four-game series with a doubleheader on Tuesday, starting at 1 p.m. at the Seawolf Softball Field.
