Errors Plague Seawolves In Loss To Warriors

Kyle Jones had three hits in Saturday's loss to the Warriors.
Box Score:  Cal State Stanislaus 10, No. 19 Sonoma State 9

TURLOCK, Calif-  In a wild opener to a four-game CCAA series, Cal State Stanislaus edged Sonoma State 10-9 on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Baseball Field in Turlock.  Though the teams expected to play twice on Saturday, the 4-hour, 13-minute marathon pushed the second game to Monday, following Sunday's double dip at Seawolf Diamond.

The 19th-ranked Seawolves fall to 18-7 overall and 11-7 in CCAA play.  They remain in second place, a game and a half behind Chico State.  The Warriors improve to 18-9, 12-9 CCAA heading into game two of the series.

Sonoma State got out to a big start with four runs and five hits in the first inning.  O'Koyea Dickson provided the biggest hit, a two-run home run, his team-high sixth roundtripper of the season.

Up 4-0, the Seawolves would have little time to enjoy their lead as the Warriors stormed back with three runs thanks to three Sonoma State errors.  It would be a disturbing trend for Sonoma as they would commit a season-high six errors on the day.

The teams would each score in the second before Stanislaus plated a pair in the third to go up 6-5.  In the fifth, Sonoma State would charge back with three runs.  Kyle Jones doubled in a run and scored on a wild pitch while Garrett Schwartz was responsible for driving in the other.

The Warriors would notch single runs in the bottom of the fifth and seventh to tie the game at eight.  In the eighth inning, Sonoma State would go up 9-8 when a Jones infleld single scored a run.  However, a two-out single in the bottom of the frame by Colton Beatty would square things at nine.

The score would hold at 9-9 until the 13th inning when Stanislaus found the game-winner.  With one out, on a Zach Cadet double to left center, left fielder Steven Fillippi committed an error to advance Cadet to third.  The next batter, Kory Vitato, would single through the left side to end the game.

Kyle Jones had three hits to lead a 14-hit Sonoma State attack.  He scored twice and drove in two.  Thomas Lee got the start for Sonoma, surrendering six earned runs and ten hits in five innings, in what would turn out to be his rockiest start of the season.  Ian Ocon tossed five solid innings of relief before giving way to Brian Bordagaray.

Cadet and David Contreras each had three hits for the Warriors, who banged out 15 as a team.  Leonard Giammanco earned the win with two innings of perfect relief.

The Seawolves and Warriors will play games two and three of the series on Sunday at Seawolf Diamond.  The opener is set for a 12 noon start.
