Box Scores: SSU 1, CSUDH 0 | CSUDH 2, SSU 1

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- With no score in the bottom of the seventh inning, Danielle D'Eccliss poked a two-out single through the left side of the infield to score Tatiana Pizarro from third, giving Sonoma State the 1-0 victory in game one of Thursday's doubleheader against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Seawolves (32-19, 22-12 CCAA) were unable to overcome a pair of runs scored by the Toros (26-21, 16-14 CCAA) early in game two, as CSUDH won the nightcap, 2-1.

With 14 strikeouts in the two games combined on Thursday, sophomore pitcher Samantha Lipperd is just eight strikeouts from breaking the program's all-time record for most in a career, topping Brenda Scally's record of 426 (1994-97). She currently has 419 in her career, including a conference-leading 272 this season.

Neither team could get much going offensively in the series opener, as there were only seven combined hits by both teams through the first six innings of play. Lipperd was again her dominating self in the circle, allowing no runs on just three hits the entire ballgame, walking four and striking out ten.

Meanwhile, Cal State Dominguez Hills' Lauren Harper and Stephanie Jimenez held the Sonoma State offense off the scoreboard as well. Harper gave up four hits in the first three innings of work after taking a line drive off her knee in the first inning. She continued for the next couple of innings and struckout two. She gave way to Jimenez in the fourth and she didn't allow a hit until the bottom of the seventh when Ali Palermo singled up the middle the lead off the inning. Palermo was replaced by Pizarro who advanced to second on a wild pitch then stole third base with two outs. D'Eccliss delivered the game-winning single a couple of pitches later. Jimenez fell to 12-10 on the season.

Skylynn Myers had two of the six Sonoma State hits in game one. Rochelle Vanyi and Brittanie Verissimo also had base hits for the Seawolves. Jessica Amador and Jessica Hall combined for all three Toro safeties.

Cal State Dominguez Hills 2, Sonoma State 1

After being shutout in game one, Cal State Dominguez Hills finally broke through against Lipperd in the top of the second inning of the nightcap. A two-RBI double by Jackie Reyes that scored runners from first and second put the Toros up 2-0. It would prove to be the difference down the road.

Harper and Jimenez allowed just four Seawolf hits in game two, three of which came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sonoma State started to mount its comeback, putting runners on first and second with no outs after back-to-back singles by Verissimo and Vanessa Currie. However, Palermo hit into a double play that put out the lead runner, Verissimo, and Palermo out at first. Currie was able to advance to second. That would help the Seawolves as Jesse Talaugon would come through with a single to score Currie, cutting the Toro lead in half at 2-1. It would be all SSU would get though, as Jimenez got out of the inning on a strikeout.

Jimenez contined to shut down Sonoma State in the final two innings, retiring all six batters in order to earn her sixth save of the season. Harper (13-11) got the victory, giving up just three hits and a run while striking out one in four innings of work.

Lipperd (21-8) was tagged with the loss after giving up the two runs in the second. She has matched her record from a season ago, as Lipperd is now 42-16 as the pitcher of record in her first two seasons at Sonoma State. She gave up five hits, two runs and struckout four before giving way to Ciara Becerril in the fifth. Becerril scattered just three hits in her three innings of work, striking out one.

Sonoma State and Cal State Dominguez Hills, both of which are still trying to cement themselves into one of four spots in the CCAA Championship Tournament next weekend in Stockton, will face off in the final two regular season games on Friday at the Seawolf Softball Field. It will also be Senior Day, as five Sonoma State seniors -- Kayla Ledford, Danielle Lowe, Brittany Martinez, Jesse Talaugon and Rochelle Vanyi -- will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony, beginning at approximately 10:30 a.m.
