ROHNERT PARK, Calif- After another dominating performance by
Samantha Lipperd in the opener, in which she led Sonoma State to a 5-0 win over visiting Chaminade with 15 strikeouts, the Seawolves surrendered five runs in the final two innings as Chaminade pulled out the 5-4 win in game two in Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader in Rohnert Park. With the ninth doubleheader split of the season, SSU moves to 24-13 this season while Chaminade goes to 11-25.
Sonoma State 5, Chaminade 0
After three scoreless innings, the Seawolves finally broke through with a pair of runs in the fourth.
Danielle Lowe, who pinch ran for
Brittany Martinez after a leadoff walk, stole second and third before
Vanessa Currie walked to put runners on first and third with no outs. Currie then took off for second and Lowe advanced home on the throw, putting SSU up 1-0. Them after a flyout by
Ali Palermo that moved Currie to third,
Jesse Talaugon sent a sacrifice fly out to center field to score Currie and the Seawolves led 2-0.
In the fifth,
Rochelle Vanyi came around to score from second after a throwing error by Chaminade pitcher Kelly Korras trying to get Lowe out at first on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
Up 3-0 in the sixth,
Megan Konieczka, who pinch hit for Danielle D'Eccliss in the number nine spot, crushed the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for the two-run home run that scored
Tatiana Pizarro.
Lipperd took control from there, retiring the three batters she saw in the seventh, securing the 5-0 shutout win in the opener. She give up just two hits while improving to 14-4 this season. Lipperd also tied a season-high, fanning 15 of the 26 Chaminade batters she faced.
Offensively,
Skylynn Myers led the way, going 3 for 4 and Vanyi went 2 for 4 with a run scored. It accounted for five of the nine hits by Sonoma State in the ballgame.
Korras (2-13) was tagged with the loss, giving up the nine hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks. Samantha Ford and Chasity Senas were the only two Silverswords to get on base via a hit.
Chaminade 5, Sonoma State 4
In game two, Vanyi put the Seawolves up 1-0 with a RBI triple that scored Myers in the bottom of the first.
Brittanie Verissimo scored the second run of the game in the fourth inning after crossing the plate on a fielding error by third baseman Kori Berinobis, one of five miscues on the day by Berinobis.
With a 2-0 lead,
Kayla Ledford brought home Konieczka with a one-out RBI double then Ledford came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Vanyi, putting the Seawolves up 4-0.
However, in the sixth, Chaminade put two runs on a board with a two-RBI single by Samantha Ford, then Ford scored on a RBI double by Melissa Harris. Trailing by just one run at 4-3 in the seventh, the Silverswords took the lead after a two-RBI single by Ford off of
Ciara Becerril, who came on in relief of
Julianne Martinez in the sixth. It was enough as CUH's Kasy'e Lalau retired the Seawolves in order in their last at bat to secure the upset win.
Myers went 2 for 3 with a run scored and Vanyi had a hit and two RBI. J Martinez went 5.1 innings, giving up just two hits and two walks, but allowed the first three runs. Becerril (3-4) scattered two hits and allowed the game winning runs in her 1.2 innings of work.
Lalau got the win for Chaminade and improved to 7-7 this season. Ford went 2 for 4 with four RBI.
Sonoma State will return to CCAA competition this weekend as it will travel south to Seaside to face Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and Saturday. After the weekend series with the Otters, SSU will host Chico State (Apr. 11-12) and take on nationally-ranked UC San Diego in La Jolla (Apr. 15-16) before returning home to host Cal State Dominguez Hills in the final regular season series (Apr. 21-22).
