Samantha Lipperd struckout 20 batters in 12 and two-thirds innings against Cal State Monterey Bay in a doubleheader on Friday, but a costly error by Sonoma State in the game one forced a split between the Seawolves and Otters at Otter Softball Field in Seaside. It was the tenth twinbill split of the season for SSU as it moves to 25-14 overall and 15-7 in the CCAA. CSUMB goes to 19-22 (12-13 CCAA).
Lipperd became the single-season strikeout record holder with 209 so far this season. It broke the former record of 202 set by Lindsay Emmel in 2007.
Cal State Monterey Bay 1, Sonoma State 0
It was an absolute pitcher's duel from the very beginning between Sonoma State's Lipperd and Cal State Monterey Bay's Diane Ortiz.
The Seawolves threatened early on two consecutive singles up the middle by
Danielle Lowe and
Kayla Ledford in the first. Both runners moved up a base after a sacrifice bunt by
Skylynn Myers. But, with one out and two runners in scoring position, Lowe was caught stealing at home and Ortiz forced
Brittanie Verissimo to pop up in the infield to end the inning.
In the second,
Ali Palermo would single up the middle moving pinch runner Danielle D'Eccliss over to third with one out, but a groundout and a strikeout would again end the threat for Sonoma State. It would be the last time Sonoma State would advance beyond first base the rest of the game as Ortiz shut down the Seawolves offense.
Meanwhile, Lipperd tossed a no-hitter through five innings until Angelina Orozco singled in the sixth. It would be the only hit that Cal State Monterey Bay would get in the opener.
It looked as if the game would head to extra innings in a scoreless tie, but with two outs, CSUMB's Jackie Serna sent left fielder
Vanessa Currie back to the wall. As Currie turned around to make the catch, the ball glanced off her glove and over the outfield fence, allowing Serna to trot the bases and score the game-winner on the four-base error.
It overshadowed Lipperd's outstanding effort in the circle, as the sophomore right-hander allowed just the one hit in the contest while striking out 11 of the 23 batters she faced. Ortiz (8-11) got the victory, giving up just the three hits in her shutout effort. She walked four and struckout five.
Sonoma State 6, Cal State Monterey Bay 0
Lipperd again started in game two after the unfortunate loss in game one. She didn't miss a beat, though, striking out nine Cal State Monterey Bay hitters in six innings of work before giving way to
Ciara Becerril in the seventh. Lipperd (15-5) gave up just three hits and didn't allow a run while Becerril retired three of the four batters she faced -- the other reached on an error by
Rochelle Vanyi.
While the Seawolves pitching staff kept the Otters off the scoreboard, the Seawolves offense finally broke through with a pair of runs in the third. A leadoff home run by
Brittany Martinez put SSU up 1-0 before Palermo scored from second on a passed ball and a throwing error by CSUMB catcher Shae Olds. Vanyi then gave Sonoma State the 3-0 lead with a RBI double to right center that scored D'Eccliss.
In the fifth, the Seawolves would tack on two more runs on a RBI single by Myers, followed by a fielding error by Orozco that allowed Ledford to score behind
Jesse Talaugon, who scored on the single by Myers.
Leading 5-0 in the sixth, Palermo would bring home
Megan Konieczka on a sacrifice fly which gave Sonoma State the 6-0 lead and eventual victory over host Cal State Monterey Bay.
B. Martinez had two hits to the lead the Seawolf offense that amassed eight hits off both Otter pitchers, Caitlin Wallace and Kylie Linnane. Wallace (3-3) pitched the first 2.2 innings, giving up three runs on three hits. Linnane went the rest of the way, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out five.
In 86.2 innings pitched during CCAA play, Lipperd has an unprecedented 0.32 earned run average and opponents are hitting just .102 against her with 127 of her 209 strikeouts coming in conference games.
Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay will wrap up its four-game set on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at Noon in Seaside.
