Box Scores: SSU 2, CSUMB 1 | CSUMB 5, SSU 4

SEASIDE, Calif- Rochelle Vanyi and Ali Palermo had a RBI in game one while Samantha Lipperd held Cal State Monterey Bay to one run off two hits for the 2-1 victory, but the Otters came through with a game-winning single in their final at bat in the nightcap to salvage the doubleheader split with a 5-4 win over Sonoma State on Saturday. The split, which becomes the eleventh of the season, moves the Seawolves to 26-15 overall and 16-8 in the CCAA, falling to third in the standings.

Sonoma State 2, Cal State Monterey Bay 1

Jackie Serna got the scoring started on Saturday with a solo home run for Cal State Monterey Bay in the bottom of the second off Lipperd. However, Sonoma State got the run right back in the top of the third when it loaded the bases and Vanyi brought home Danielle Lowe on a sacrifice fly. It would be all the Seawolves would get though, as Kylie Linnane struckout Brittanie Verissimo to end the inning.

Sonoma State got the go-ahead run an inning later when Palermo singled up the middle, scoring Danielle D'Eccliss, who pinch ran for Brittany Martinez. B. Martinez reached base on a leadoff walk. Linnane would again pitch herself out of the inning, forcing a flyout and a groundout.

In the fifth, the Seawolves again loaded the bases with two outs on two singles and a walk, but Linnane forced Jesse Talaugon to fly out to center field, leaving three runners on.

Lipperd took things into her own hands, though, and shut down the Otter offense to give Sonoma State the narrow 2-1 victory in the opener. She gave up just two hits and the one run (the home run by Serna in the second), while walking two and striking out eight. Kayla Ledford and Palermo had two hits to lead the way.

Cal State Monterey Bay 5, Sonoma State 4

In the nightcap, Skylynn Myers gave the Seawolves the 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to score Lowe. The lead wouldn't last long as Cal State Monterey Bay plated three runs in the bottom half of the first with three RBI singles against Lipperd. Then, in the second, Lipperd gave up a solo home run to Angelina Orozco before giving way to Ciara Becerril.

Becerril kept the powerful CSUMB lineup from exploding for the next five innings, allowing just three hits before the seventh.

Down 4-1, Myers smashed a two-run shot to left center in the third, scoring Lowe to trail just 4-3. For the third time on Saturday, In the fourth, Megan Konieczka lifted a sacrfice fly to score B. Martinez, knotting the game at 4-4.

Giving themselves a huge chance to open up a big lead, the Seawolves again loaded the bases with one out, but Caitlin Wallace, who came on in relief of starter Diane Ortiz, got Ledford to pop up in the infield and Myers to line out to first base, ending the threat.

It was a huge missed opportunity as the Otters began the bottom of the seventh with a triple to center field by Jamie Moon, who was brought home a couple of pitches later by Shae Olds for the game-winning run.

Becerril fell to 4-4 this season despite allowing five hits and one run in five innings of work. Myers went 2 for 3 with three RBI and a run scored. B. Martinez also had to hits to lead the Seawolf offense.

Four Cal State Monterey Bay players had two hits each. Wallace (4-3) got the win after giving up just one hit and not allowing a run in the final three innings.

Sonoma State will return home on Monday and Tuesday to face Chico State in Rohnert Park, a rescheduled series between the two teams after a rain out earlier this season. First pitch on Monday is set for 2 p.m.
