Sonoma Comeback Not Quite Enough In Loss To SF State

Elizabeth Day recorded a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.
BOX SCORE ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Jaclyn Bisordi tossed up the potential game-winning three just before the buzzer, but her shot veered left, ending Sonoma State's hopes of a comeback win against San Francisco State on Thursday night at The Wolves' Den.  The Gators opened up a big first half lead, then held on for a 51-49 win to improve to 3-11, 2-6 CCAA.  The Seawolves, fresh off a big road win at Cal State L.A., see their season mark slip  to 5-8, 3-6 CCAA.

The Seawolves started out strong, hitting four of their first five attempts on their way to a 9-7 lead in the first three minutes.  San Francisco State, however, would answer, reeling off ten consecutive points to go up 17-9 five minutes later.  While Sonoma would trim the deficit to four at one point, the lead stayed in double figures for most of the first half before settling on a 33-22 halftime score.

Down 39-28 with under 14 minutes to go, the Seawolves began chipping away at the Gator advantage.  Five straight points by freshman Travis Newman spurred a Sonoma rally that saw them slice the lead to two with 6:52 left.  A minute and a half later, the Seawolves pulled even, at 47, when Elizabeth Day converted a layup.

Again, however, the Seawolves were left to endure a cold stretch, missing their next five shots over a four-minute stretch.  During that period of time, SF State scored four points to regain the lead.

At the 1:32 mark, Day broke the funk with a layup that cut the lead to two at 51-49.  Just 27 seconds later, SF State's Nicole Hicks missed a three-pointer, giving the Seawolves the ball, down two, with just over a minute to play.

The Seawolves' first game-winning attempt came with 34 seconds left when Newman just missed on a three-point attempt.  Day was there for the rebound, one of ten for her on the night, to give the Seawolves another opportunity.

The Seawolves milked the clock for one last attempt, putting the ball in the hands of Bisordi, their leading scorer.  Unfortunately, she had to hoist her shot with the defense right in her face, completing a night of dreadful shooting from beyond the arc for the home team.

In all, the Seawolves shot 30.5% from the field, but just 15.8% (3-for-19) from three-point territory.  Elizabeth Day led the way with ten points and ten rebounds in a solid performance off the bench.  Newman had nine points and Bisordi added eight for Sonoma.

Nicole Hicks had a big game for the Gators, scoring 22 points on 7-of-20 shooting.  Farrah Shokoor had 12 points and Lauren Varney dragged down 13 rebounds.  San Francisco State shot a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line.

Sonoma State will try to rebound on Saturday night when they host 16th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona.  The Broncos were in action at Humboldt State tonight.
