No. 1 Tritons Use Balanced Second Half To Beat Seawolves

Senior Jaclyn Bisordi scored a team-high 15 points and dished out three assists on Friday in La Jolla.
BOX SCORE LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Three players scored in double-figures for Sonoma State, including a team-high 15 points from Jaclyn Bisordi, but top-ranked UC San Diego used a balanced attack of efficient shooting and stifling defense in the second half earn a 73-57 victory over the visiting Seawolves on Friday night at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla.  SSU has lost five of its last six games, falling to 5-10 overall and 3-8 in the CCAA.  UCSD, who came into the game ranked No. 1 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top 25 Poll for the first time in program history, remains undefeated at 17-0 overall and 11-0 in conference action this season.

It was all Sonoma State in the first 12 minutes of the game, as the Seawolves eventually grabbed a six-point, 18-12 lead at the 9:38 mark on a layup by Bisordi.  In addition to outstanding play on the offensive side of the ball, the SSU defense held UCSD to just 4 of 16 from the hardwood to start the game.  However, in the final 9:24 of the half, the Tritons end up going on a 22-11 run, including 11 unanswered points over a span of 4:24, to hold a narrow 34-31 lead at halftime.  Despite the disadvantage on the scoreboard, the Seawolves had the hotter hand, hitting 46.7 percent of their shots while holding the Tritons to just 34.3 percent.

UC San Diego took some of that momentum from the end of the opening period and continued it in the second half as the Tritons scored the first seven points to open up a 10-point lead at 41-31.  A pair of jumpers on consecutive possessions, including a layup by Aly Conway with 17:11 on the clock, got Sonoma State to within six at 41-35, but the Tritons went on another 11-0 run to lead by 17 at 52-35.  It wasn't until the 10:12 mark that the Seawolves scored their next field goal, a jumper by Aly Henington, but four free throws and a three-pointer by Bronte Sheahan with 9:32 left kept the visitors within striking distance, trailing by just 10 at 54-44.

That would be as close as SSU would get the rest of the way, though, as UCSD continued its hot shooting hand and eventually earned the 73-57 win, thanks to the final exclamation point by Daisy Feder, a three-pointer with only 28 seconds left in the contest.  Feder led all scorers with 23 points on 5 of 12 shooting and 9 of 12 from the free throw line.

Bisordi led the team in scoring for the fifth time in the last seven games, netting 15 on 6 of 12 from the floor. Sheahan dropped in a career-high 13 points and Conway chipped in with 10, while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds, six of which came on the offensive glass.  As a team, Sonoma State connected on 22 of its 57 shots (38.6 percent), but it was the 8 of 27 (29.6 percent) from the hardwood in the second half (mixed with 14 of 26 from the floor by UCSD in the final 20 minutes) that kept the Seawolves from pulling the upset.

The Tritons' Emily Osga scored 19 points, followed by 17 points from Chelsea Carlisle, complementing the 23 points of Feder.  Carlisle, who was named the CCAA Player of the Week last week, also dished out 12 assists and had three blocks.

Sonoma State will return to the hardwood on Saturday when it travels north to take on Cal State San Bernardino.  Tipoff from Coussoulis Arena is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
