BOX SCORE SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --
Jaclyn Bisordi and
Tori Carroll combined for 22 points, 15 of which came in the second half, and the defense came up big, holding Cal State San Bernardino to only 26.5 percent from the floor to help the Sonoma State women's basketball team to a 54-46 victory over the Coyotes on Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino. The Seawolves rise to 6-10 overall and 4-8 in the CCAA, snapping a three-game skid. The Coyotes fall to 5-11 (4-8 CCAA).
Sonoma State led for the entire first half and even held an eight-point advantage at 17-9 with nine minutes left in the opening half; it would match the Seawolves' largest lead of the night. However, Cal State San Bernardino would score nine of the final 13 points before halftime, closing the gap to just three points (21-18).
Bisordi got the scoring started for the Seawolves right out of the intermission, netting five points to give SSU the 26-20 lead. The Coyotes would begin their move and later took the lead at 12:27 mark, with 32-30 showing on the scoreboard in favor of the home squad. Both teams would trade points, but Cal State San Bernardino saw its largest lead of the night at the 8:10 mark on a three-pointer by Jaslyn Cosey. It was all Sonoma State from there as
Elizabeth Day and
Bronte Sheahan spearheaded a 9-0 run, part of a 13-2 scoring spurt that saw the Seawolves take a comfortable seven-point lead with only 2:28 left in the contest.
A jumper by the Coyotes' Eliza Dy with 1:07 on the clock cut the lead to five and from then on, the game turned to the free throw line. However, it was Sonoma State who took care of business at the stripe, hitting 5 of its 6 attempts, including a perfect 4 for 4 by
Alysa Ito in the final seconds to secure the 54-46 win.
It was the sixth time in the last eight games that Bisordi led the team in scoring; seven of her 12 points came in the final half. Carroll scored in double-figures for the second time this season, dropping in 10 points. Day and Sheahan scored nine points apiece while
Marie Sweet,
Taylor Vigil and Day crashed the boards for seven rebounds each, helping SSU outrebound CSUSB, 45-35. Ito handed out a game-high five assists.
As the Seawolves enjoyed a 44.7 percent night from the hardwood -- one of their most efficient nights of the season -- the defense also played a big role in Saturday's win, holding the hosts to a dismal 26.5 percent on 18 of 68, including just 5 of 29 from beyond the three-point arc.
For Cal State San Bernardino, Dy led all scorers with 22 points, followed by the 13 points from Cosey.
Sonoma State will next travel up to Chico State on Friday to face the Wildcats, starting at 5:30 p.m.
