BOX SCORE CHICO, Calif. --
Jaclyn Bisordi scored a season-high 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting and
Taylor Vigil chipped in with 12 points, as the Sonoma State women's basketball team earned a dominating 57-45 win over host Chico State on Friday night in Chico. It is the first win in Chico for head coach
Mark Rigby and the Seawolves since the 2001-02 season, snapping a nine-game skid on the floor of Acker Gymnasium. SSU jumps to 7-10 overall and 5-8 in CCAA action, while Chico State stumbles to 10-6 (7-5 CCAA).
After a back-and-forth start with both teams trading baskets, Sonoma State finally grabbed its first lead of the night on a successful three-point play by Bisordi that put SSU up 9-6, five and a half minutes into the contest. One minute later, Chico State pulled to within one points on a basket by Ymonne Davidson-Mays, but the Seawolves would sprint out to a 10-point lead at 19-9 thanks to a pair of made shots by Vigil, followed by contributions from Bisordi,
Marie Sweet and
Bronte Sheahan.
The Seawolves continued their defensive pressure while maintaining a solid offensive effort; SSU would end up leading by as much as 17 points on a pair of occasions, including a stunning 31-14 lead with 41 seconds before halftime.
For much of the second half, Sonoma State held a double-digit lead until Chico's Caressa Williams and Sunchro Bull got the Wildcats to within just six points (44-38) with 8:24 to play. The teams would again trade baskets, but the Seawolves regained their momentum and eventually extended their lead to as much as 14 points at 55-41 with under two minutes left. It would be too much for Chico State to overcome, though, as Sonoma State cruised to the 57-45 win.
Bisordi's 20 points led all scorers on Friday; scored five of her points from the free throw line. Vigil dropped in 12 points on 6 of 10 from the floor and Sweet netted nine points on a perfect 4 for 4 shooting.
Elizabeth Day crashed the boards for a game-high seven rebounds, helping the Seawolves outrebound the Wildcats, 33-22, including 14-8 on the offensive glass. Offensively, Sonoma State shot 47.9 percent as a team (23-48), the second-best output this season.
Chico State got 15 points from Bull; the only Wildcat in double-figures. The hosts shot 40.9 percent (18-44) on Friday night.
Sonoma State will travel south to Turlock to face Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday night, tipping off at 5:30 p.m. from Fitzpatrick Arena. The Seawolves will then return home to The Wolves' Den on Feb. 2 to play six of their last eight games of the regular season.
