Dominating First Half Propels Seawolves To Upset Win At CSULA

Senior Aly Conway had team-highs of 10 points and nine rebounds in Saturday's win.
BOX SCORE LOS ANGELES- Thanks to a hot-shooting performance and stifling defense in the first half, the Sonoma State women's basketball team was able to hold off a late run by Cal State L.A. in the Seawolves' 53-49 upset of the Golden Eagles on Saturday at the Eagles Nest in Los Angeles. SSU rises to 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the CCAA while CSULA sees a three-game win streak to an end, falling to 7-5 (5-3 CCAA).

Aly Conway scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and Jaclyn Bisordi tied a school record with eight steals in the victory.

It was a tale of two halves for both teams, though.  Sonoma State came out on fire, hitting 14 of its first 30 shots (46.7 percent).  It wasn't just the offense that was clicking for the Seawolves, but SSU also stepped up the pressure on defense, forcing 13 first-half turnovers, including 11 by virtue of the steal.  In fact, Bisordi snatched six of her school record-tying eight in the opening period.  Cal State L.A. was held to 36.4 percent from the floor (8 of 22), including just 1 of 10 from beyond the arc.  When the dust settled and the clock had expired to signal halftime, the Seawolves held a comfortable 33-22 lead.

Sonoma State would continue its fortune to begin the second half, going up by as much as 16 points with a 40-24 lead after just three minutes of second-half action.  However, from that point on, the Seawolves would hit only three shots over the next 15 minutes, allowing the Golden Eagles to cut the SSU lead to only six points at 46-40 with under three minutes left in the game.  An Aly Henington three pointer gave the Seawolves an eight-point advantage, but CSULA answered with a three pointer of its own on the ensuing possession to close the gap to five at 48-43.

Elizabeth Day would put Sonoma State back up to a lead of seven (50-43) and a made free throw by Henington increased the advantage to eight (51-43) with 43 seconds left in the game.  In the final seconds, both teams traded possessions via several turnovers and missed shots, but it was Cal State L.A. that held momentum and scored the game's next six points to get within just two points at 51-49, including a pair of free throws by CSULA's Lacy Ramon with four seconds left.  On the inbounds pass, Henington was fouled immediately, but she swished both shots from the charity stripe to seal the 53-49 victory for Sonoma State.

For the game, the Seawolves connected on 39.3 percent of their shots (22 for 56), including just 8 of 26 from the hardwood in the final 20 minutes.  Sonoma State only went to the free throw line three times in the contest, hitting 5 of 6.

Cal State L.A. went 16 for 52 from the floor in the game, hitting just 3 of 22 from beyond the three-point arc.  Jazzi Johnson led all scorers with 11 points, while Ramon chipped in with 10.

Sonoma State will now return home on Thursday to face San Francisco State at The Wolves' Den, the start of a brief two-game homestand.  Tipoff between the Seawolves and Gators is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
