BOX SCORE UC San Diego 2, Sonoma State 0 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Sonoma State men's soccer team will want to quickly put this one in the rearview mirror. After an afternoon in which things seemed out of sync from start to finish, UC San Diego emerged with just their second-ever victory in Rohnert Park, a 2-0 win over the Seawolves on Friday afternoon. The loss drops the Seawolves to 5-3-2, 4-2-2 CCAA. The Tritons improve to 7-2-2, 6-1-2 CCAA.
By virtue of Chico State's tie with Cal State East Bay, Friday's loss to UCSD drops the Seawolves from first place in the CCAA's North Division. With 14 points, they trail Chico (15) by one point and have a three-point lead on Cal State Stanislaus (11), though the Warriors have one game in hand.
The Tritons got on the board first in the ninth minute, with a little help from the Seawolves. After UCSD sent the ball into the box, a herd of Seawolves ran over to clear it. Unfortunately, in the scramble, the ball bounced off one of the Sonoma defenders and back into the goal. The frustrating goal was, unfortunately, a sign of things to come.
The Seawolves were able to manage just one shot in the first half and only four in the entire game. Their shot total was nearly nine less than their season average and the fewest an SSU team has mustered in a game since 2005.
UCSD doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when Tsuk Haroush gathered a rebound and blasted a shot past
Beau Diaz and into the net. Evan Walker was credited with the assist.
UC San Diego had seven shots in the game and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Fouls leaned a bit in Sonoma's direction, 17-14.
After five wins in their first six games, the Seawolves have scuffled, going 0-2-2 in their last four. They'll look to turn things around on Sunday afternoon when they take on Cal State San Bernardino. Gametime is set for 2:00 pm.
