BOX SCORE No. 13 Sonoma State 0, No. 17 UC San Diego 0 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- In a battle of nationally-ranked teams atop their respective divisions in the CCAA, Sonoma State and UC San Diego would not disappoint, finishing the afternoon in a 0-0 tie following 110 minutes of play. The Seawolves would out-shoot the Tritons 23-13 in the defensive showcase, however it would be good for only one point in the standings as Sonoma sees its record adjusted to 9-1-1, 6-1-1 CCAA. The Tritons, following seven straight wins to open the season, are now winless in their last three, to stand at 7-1-2, 6-1-2 CCAA.
While both teams had promising runs throughout the game, it was the outstanding play of the goalkeepers,
Alexis Sciacqua of Sonoma State and Kelcie Brodsky of UC San Diego, that kept the teams notted. Sciacqua made seven saves on her way to her sixth shutout of the season and Brodsky had eight to post her fifth, as well.
Perhaps the most exciting opportunity in regulation came with just over three minutes left, when SSU's
Sara Studer sent a laser from deep on the left side that richocheted off the cross bar. In an afternoon filled with near misses, the crowd applauded the effort and the teams set their sights on overtime.
In the first overtime, SSU had three shots, to one for UCSD, but two went high and one was saved by Brodsky.
UC San Diego had a chance to end it early in the second overtime, but a point blank opportunity by Gabi Hernandez was coralled by Sciacqua.
The Seawolves would pepper the Triton box with four shots in the last four minutes, but on this day, a goal just wasn't to be found.
The Seawolves got a game-high six shots from
Cara Curtin.
Elena Catania added four, all of which were on goal. No single Triton had more than two shots.
With the tie, Sonoma State stays one point up on Cal State Stanislaus in the CCAA North Division, though the 8th-ranked Warriors have played one less game. At 6-1-1, the Seawolves have 19 points while the Warriors, at 6-1-0, have 18. Stanislaus was a 2-1 double overtime winner over Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday.
Sonoma State returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Cal State San Bernardino. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 am.
