Seawolves Battle Against Division I Schools At Aggie Invite

DAVIS, Calif. -- The Sonoma State men's tennis team traveled to the campus of UC Davis to take part in the three-day UC Davis Aggie Invitational.  The Seawolves looked to find good experience against top Division I teams in their second tournament of the short fall season.

On Friday, Jimmy Manning led things off in Flight C with a hard fought win over Billy Bumgardner from the University of Nevada.  After dropping the first set, 3-6, Manning came back to stun Bumgardner, winning the next two sets by a score of 6-4, 6-4.  Drexler Dy, David Hutton and Seth Hein all competed in Flight B for the Seawolves, however, the trio went 0-for-3 for the day.  In his first match, Dy went up against Ryan Andrada, also from Nevada, and lost in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.  Hutton faced George Horowicz from the hosting UC Davis team, but saw defeat in a strong 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 battle.  Also drawing his match out to three sets, Hein would be overmatched by California's Stuart Miller, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

In Friday's doubles competition, the Sonoma State pairs of Hutton/Dy and Manning/Hein both saw similar defeats.  Hutton and Dy played first match against Cal's Nikhil Jayashankar and Wyatt Houghton, losing 8-2.  Manning and Hein aslo lost 8-2, to UCD's Alex Haley and Mitch Thorp.

Day two started with Hutton losing to Fresno State's Jeremy Quiroz, 6-2, 6-1, in a singles consolation match.  After winning his singles match on Friday, Manning went up against Johan Samuelsson from the University of San Francisco.  Manning put up a fight, but Samuelsson was ultimately too strong, beating Manning 6-3, 6-3.

Saturday also saw the doubles consolation round, in which both Sonoma State pairs were a part of.  Hutton and Dy faced Bumgardner and Nicholas Sexton from Nevada,  and were defeated in a close 8-6 match.  Manning and Hutton weren't able to come up with a win either, as they faced the St. Mary's pairing of Alec Wagner and Seif El Sherbini, losing 8-6 as well.

Sonoma State will take almost a month off from competition before playing in the UOP Invitational from Nov. 1-3.  This will be one more tune-up tournament for the Seawolves before the spring season begins in 2013.
