BOX SCORE Sonoma State 70, San Francisco State 60 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Taylor Vigil had a hot hand Saturday, netting all 12 shots she took from the field for a career-high 24 points, adding five rebounds, four steals, two blocks and two assists, leading the Sonoma State women's basketball team to an impressive 70-60 win over visiting San Francisco State at The Wolves' Den. It is the first win for the Seawolves in their 2012-13 campaign, avenging a narrow two-point loss at SFSU earler in the week, as they improve to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA. The Gators fall to 2-2 and 1-1 in conference play.
Vigil's 24 points was the most scored in a single game by an SSU women's basketball player since former Seawolf Genny Anderson dropped in 29 points during a 70-62 win against Cal Poly Pomona on Feb. 28, 2008. Making all 12 shots she took, Vigil led Sonoma to a blazing 54.3 percent mark from the hardwood, as the team connected on 25 of their 46 shots, including an unstoppable 14 of 22 (63.6 percent) in the second half.
Most of the offense came in the second half -- Sonoma State went into the intermission with a 26-19 lead. Though the Seawolves led the entire way, San Francisco State stayed within eight points through the first 20 minutes of play. Then, two consecutive buckets by Vigil to open the second half gave SSU a double-digit lead at 30-19, but SFSU would come storming back on a 12-2 run to trail 32-31, but a three-pointer by
Alysa Ito gave the hosts a four-point cushion, which eventually grew to a 13-point lead at 53-40 with 8:06 remaining in the contest.
However, the Gators would make things interesting late in regulation, chipping away at their deficit, which got to as little as four points (62-58) with 32 seconds left, but SFSU was forced to foul the rest of the way, putting SSU at the free throw line. It wouldn't faze the Seawolves at all, nailing all 10 of their free throws down the stretch -- four by
Kristina Fahey, then a pair of charity shots each from
Tanner Adams,
Alysa Ito and
Jamie Capoot -- to keep the Gators from coming any closer.
Elizabeth Day added 10 points in the victory on 4 fo 7 shooting from the field, Fahey brought in nine points and Capoot followed with eight. In total, Sonoma State was nearly perfect from the free throw line, connecting on 18 of 21 attempts (85.7 percent).
San Francisco State was led by the 16 points of Michaela Booker before she fouled out with less than a minute left in the game; Angela Van Sickel also chipped in with 16 points, followed by 11 off the hands of Nicole Hicks. The Sonoma defense held SF State to 22 of 54 shooting (40.7 percent).
Sonoma State will now look ahead to Friday when it hosts Cal State Monterey Bay at 5:30 p.m. in The Wolves' Den.
