BOX SCORE Cal State Monterey Bay 78, Sonoma State 45 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Bronte Sheahan scored a career-high 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting from the field, including 2 for 3 from beyond the arc, but the rest of the Sonoma State offense couldn't find a rhythm as Cal State Monterey Bay whisked by the Seawolves for a 78-45 win on Friday night at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. With the loss, SSU falls to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the CCAA while CSUMB (3-0, 1-0 CCAA) remains undefeated through its first three contests of 2012-13.
While the Seawolves and Otters played close to each other in the opening half, it was in the final period that Cal State Monterey Bay pulled out its weapons and began mounting an enormous lead. The only time Sonoma State would have the lead was for the first two and half minutes of the ball game, thanks to a pair of made free throws by
Alysa Ito, 36 seconds in. Several back and forth possessions would follow, but it wasn't until the 17:39 mark that CSUMB scored its first points of the night, then nearly a minute later, the Otters would take the lead for good. A 2-0 Seawolf lead turned to a 16-5 Otter advantage with 11:29 to play in the first half.
It was no surprise, however, that Sonoma State would chip away at its deficit. Down 20-9 with seven minutes left before the intermission, the Seawolves scored nine unanswered points to trail by just two at 20-18 at the 4:38 mark. Both teams would trade points, but eventually the Otters built their lead back up and went into halftime with a 32-24 advantage.
In the second half, Cal State Monterey Bay caught fire. On their first possession of the period, CSUMB's Nikki Beckman nailed a three-pointer to give the visitors an 11-point lead and it would remain a double-digit lead the rest of the way. While a successful and-one play by Sheahan got Sonoma State to within 10 points at 47-37 with 13:10 left, Cal State Monterey Bay went on a tear, outscoring the host Seawolves 31-8 to cruise to the 78-45 win.
Beckman's three-pointer to open the second half was the first of four three-pointers that she would connect on in the final frame alone, taking game-high honors with 19 points on 7 of 9 shooting, including a 5 for 7 effort from downtown. Jenna Bandy came off the bench to add 13 points, followed by 12 from Brittani Jefferson and 10 from Stefanie Corgel as Cal State Monterey Bay ended the game with a 48.3 percent mark from the floor on 29 of 60 shooting (11 of 22 from beyond the arc).
Meanwhile, the Seawolves had just one player in double-figures (Sheahan with 17). They were held to just 35.6 percent shooting (16-45), including just 22.2 percent (2-9) from long range. SSU was also outrebounded 33-25 and 21 turnovers led to 27 points for the CSUMB offense.
Sonoma State will look to rebound on Saturday night when it plays host to Cal State East Bay at 5:30 p.m. in The Wolves' Den.
