BOX SCORE Sonoma State 63, Cal State East Bay 50 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- An all-around effort, mixed with stellar shooting and stifling defense, helped the Sonoma State women's basketball team return to the win column with a 63-50 win over visiting Cal State East Bay on Saturday night in The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves got 12 points from
Taylor Vigil and 11 from
Travis Newman as SSU improved to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA. The Pioneers, who were held to just 28.1 percent from the floor, fall to 3-3 and 1-1 in the conference.
Sonoma never trailed in the contest, much thanks to a hot-shooting night in which the Seawolves buried 48.7 percent of their shots on 19 of 39 shooting, including an incredible 10 for 19 effort from beyond the three-point arc. Sonoma State was near perfect at the free throw line, too, connecting on 15 of 16 shots from the charity stripe.
The Seawolves caught fire in the opening minutes of the game and they never cooled off, hitting 13 of their 22 shots in the opening half for a blazing 59.1 percent. Vigil hit a jump shot on Sonoma's first possession to take an early 2-0 lead, but the Pioneers' Lauren Lucchesi knotted the game up at two apiece just 20 seconds later. From that point on, SSU scored the game's next eight points, kickstarting a 20-6 run over the next eight minutes to take a 14-point lead at 22-8 on a three-ball by
Bronte Sheahan.
The rout would continue as Sonoma State extended its lead to as much as 18 points at 30-12 with 4:20 to play in the opening half before taking its largest lead of the half at 21 on another three-pointer, this time by
Travis Newman with 38 ticks remaining before the intermission. A pair of free throws by CSUEB's Nia Bravo cut their deficit to 19, but SSU would sprint to the locker room with a comfortable 37-18 lead at the half.
Six of the 13 made shots for the Seawolves in the half would come from beyond the arc on 6 of 11 from downtown -- all six three-pointers came from six different SSU players.
The lead would hold at double-digits for much of the second half, but Cal State East Bay made a run, thanks to eight straight points from Lucchesi late in the ball game, including a free throw that got the Pioneers within eight points at 58-50 with 1:17 left in regulation. However, the Seawolves were able to seal the deal at the line with free shots from
Alysa Ito, Vigil and
Marie Sweet down the stretch to earn the 13-point win.
While Sonoma turned the ball over 21 times, including 11 by way of a CSU East Bay steal, the Seawolves were able to weather the storm with strong defense and a sharpshooting rhythm on offense.
Sweet chipped in with nine points and Sheahan dropped in eight, including a pair of three-pointers. Vigil also had a team-high seven rebounds to go along with her 12 points, four assists and two blocks.
Cal State East Bay's Lucchesi and Marlene MacMillan led the Pioneers, both netting 12 points in the loss.
Sonoma State will now take a break from conference play to take on a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference foes in Seattle Pacific (Friday) and Western Washington (Saturday) at the Coslet Classic CCAA/GNAC Challenge in Chico. The Seawolves will tip off at 5:30 p.m. both nights.
