ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Fueled by a career-high 12 assists from Alyssa Ito, the Sonoma State offense was clicking on all cylinders on Wednesday night, rolling to a 76-49 non-conference win over Dominican University at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. Kristina Fahey to career-high scoring totals as the Seawolves evened out their record at 4-4 on the season. The Penguins dropped to 2-7.
While both teams got out to a bit of a slow start, the Seawolves found their groove midway through the first half. From the 10:29 mark to until Dominican hit a three-pointer with two seconds left in the half, the Seawolves went on a 32-3 run that, for all intents and purposes, put the game away.
The Seawolves dominated Dominican in the paint, outscoring them 24-2 in that category in the first half. Leading the way was Ito, who tallied six of her 12 assists in a first half that saw the Seawolves shoot 58.6%.
The Penguins actually outscored the Seawolves in the second half, 37-34, but their outburst occurred late in the game, after the Seawolves had opened up a lead of as many as 40.
The Seawolves shot 50% from the field in the game and out-rebounded the Penguins 38-30. They also forced 19 turnovers and came away with 11 steals.
Newman tallied her 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and a 7-of-8 mark from the free throw line. She also had a game-high nine rebounds. Fahey, who scored 14 of her 18 in the first half, shot 8-of-11 from the field. Bronte heahan was also in double digits, with 12 points. In all, the Seawolves would get 62 points from their bench.
Ito finished with 12 assists and three steals. She was just three off the school record of 15 assists, set by Judy Anderson in 1984. Only two other players have recorded as many as 12 assists in a Sonoma State uniform- Angie Wells (twice in 1989) and Tawny Bridge (1995).
Lauren Hyatt led the Penguins with nine points and Jasmine Cox grabbed nine rebounds.
The Seawolves return to the court on January 4th and 5th, when they resume conference play with a big roadtrip to Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus.
