CHICO, Calif.-- Sonoma State got a season-high 14 points from
Kristina Fahey, but it would not be enough as they fell to a very strong Seattle Pacific club 78-57 in the first game of the 2012 CCAA/GNAC Challenge at Acker Gym in Chico. The Seawolves drop to 2-4 on ths season while the Falcons improve to 6-1.
Sonoma State came out firing, netting the first four points of the game on jumpers from
Marie Sweet and
Taylor Vigil. However, that would be their largest lead as Seattle Pacifc went on a run, putting Sonoma State in an 18-point hole at the 6:52 mark by score of 29-11. The Seawolves closed out the first half on a 12-6 run, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Vigil, bringing the score to 35-23.
The closest Sonoma State would get to the Falcons in the second half would be 11 points, as Seattle Pacific continued to control the game. The Falcons took their largest lead of night at the 6:44 mark when they had a 26-point advantage on SSU. Freshmen
Brianna Burgos,
Hannah Sourek, and
Taylor Acosta made the most of their playing time, each sinking a basket within the final 2:01.
The Seawolves were held to 32.8% shooting (20-61), while the Falcons shot 46.0% on the night (29-63).
The Seawolves were led by
Kristina Fahey with 14 points, followed by Vigil who had a 5-for-6 night from the floor, totaling 11 points. The aformentioned Sourek was a perfect 2-for-2 from the field and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe, giving her a season-high eight points.
The Falcons had three players in double figures as Brooke Bowen led all scorers with 16 points. Callen followed closely with 15 points of her own, while Rachel Murray put in a prime 13 points for Seattle Pacific.
Sonoma State will spend the night in Chico and take on the Vikings of Western Washington tomorrow evening at Acker Gymnasium. Tip off is set for 5:30 pm.
