Seawolves Keep Rolling In Vegas, Extend Win Streak to Six

Ali Palermo became Sonoma State's all-time home run leader on Saturday with her 18th and 19th.
BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 LAS VEGAS, Nev.-  The Sonoma State softball team pounded out five home runs and 26 hits on Saturday as they powered their way to a sweep of the Academy of Art and Metro State at the MSUB Desert Stinger at Majestic Park in Las Vegas.  The Seawolves routed the Urban Knights 13-2 in five innings before getting a walk-off home run from Ali Palermo in the seventh to stun the Roadrunners, 8-7.  The wins preserve Sonoma State's perfect record as they improve to 6-0 on the season.

Palermo hit two home runs on Saturday to become Sonoma State's all-time leader.  She previously shared the record of 17 with former teammate Rochelle Vanyi.  Just a junior, the Redwood City native now has 19 career home runs.

At 6-0 on the season, the Seawolves are off to the best start in school history.

GAME ONE | Sonoma State 13, Academy of Art 2  (Box Score)

Saturday's opener started out fairly uneventful.  All-American pitcher Samantha Lipperd was her normal, stellar self, allowing just two hits and striking out six in the first three innings.  However, with the score 0-0 through three, the game took a wild turn in the fourth.

A leadoff double by Skylynn Myers set the tone for what turned out to be one of the most explosive innings in school history.  In all, the Seawolves would hit four doubles and two home runs- including a three-run shot by Palermo and a grand slam by Keisi Chinen

Staked to a 12-0 lead, Lipperd was able to cruise the rest of the way, striking out five and allowing just one earned run to pick up her third victory of the season.

Vanessa Currie had three hits, Chinen finished with four RBIs, and Palermo posted three RBIs.

GAME TWO | Sonoma State 8, Metro State 7 (Box Score)

While game one supplied the fireworks, game two brought the drama.  After two runs in the second, Sonoma State scored two more in the third to build up a 4-0 lead.  Another tally in the fifth pushed the lead to 5-0, but the advantage would be short-lived as Metro State scored five times in the fifth to tie things up.

The teams went to the seventh still tied at five, before the Roadrunners plated a pair on a two-run homer by Chelsea Brew.

With their backs against the wall, trailing by two, Sonoma State simply refused to let their winning streak end.  A leadoff home run by Shannon Kehr brought the Seawolves within one at 7-6.  The next batter, Chinen, hit a triple to right field, putting the tying run just 60 feet away.

After an out was recorded, Palermo decided to do more than just tie things up as she launched a two-run walk-off home run to center field to give the Seawolves a wild come-from-behind win.

Myers finished the game 3-for-4 and Palermo went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Ciara Becerril got the start and went five innings without allowing an earned run.  She gave way to Lipperd who pitched the final two and got the win, to go to 4-0 on the season.

The Seawolves will finish up play at the Desert Stinger on Sunday when they take on Western Washington.
