Strong Second Half Not Enough, Seawolves Fall To Broncos

Elizabeth Day scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
BOX SCORE POMONA, Calif. -- Jaclyn Bisordi scored 11 of her team-high 14 points in the second half and Sonoma State outshot Cal Poly Pomona (46.4 percent-27.6 percent) during the final 20 minutes, but the Seawolves surrendered a 21-1 run early and couldn't overcome a 22-point deficit later in the period, losing to the Broncos, 70-58, on Thursday night at Kellogg Gym in Pomona.

Sonoma State (9-14, 7-12 CCAA) falls to ninth place in the conference standings, one-half game behind Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Bernardino.  Cal Poly Pomona, which is ranked seventh in the first official NCAA Division II West Region poll that was released Wednesday, improves to 16-7 overall and is in fifth place in the CCAA at 12-7.

Alysa Ito and Aly Conway hit a pair of shots early to knot the game at 4-4, but the Broncos turned on the heat and scored 21 of the game's next 22 points to jump out to a 25-5 lead.  CPP held SSU without a field goal for just over 10 minutes during that span until Bisordi ended the drought with a three-pointer at the 7:20 mark of the first half, cutting the Bronco lead to 17 at 25-8.  The Seawolves would try to make their move, but the Broncos extended their lead to as much as 22 at 40-18 with just over a minute left in the opening period.

Sonoma State connected on just 37.0 percent from the floor (10-27) in the first 20, as host Cal Poly Pomona hit on 65.3 percent of its shots (15-23).

It was a different story in the second half, though, as the Seawolves cut the deficit to just nine points when Marie Sweet laid the ball up to put 40-31 with 16:26 on the scoreboard.  However, it would be the last time SSU would get within single-digits, as CPP grabbed a pair of 20-point leads late in the half to hold off SSU's late surge that saw the Seawolves get to within 12 points on a pair of occasions.  The surge wouldn't be enough, as the Broncos held strong for the 70-58 win.

Bisordi's 14 points led Sonoma State for the 11th time this season.  Elizabeth Day came off the bench and recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Kristina Fahey and Taylor Vigil both score six points.  As a team, the Seawolves went 23 for 55 from the hardwood (41.8 percent), including just 6 of 24 from three-point range.

Cal Poly Pomona was led by the 22 points of Sarah Semenero, 13 points from Jennifer Bryant and 12 points from Megan Ford.  After scorching the nets at 65.2 percent in the first half, the Broncos cooled off in the final period and hit just 27.6 percent of their shots for a total of 44.2 percent on 23 of 52 shooting.

Sonoma State will fly back to the Bay Area for Saturday's game at San Francisco State.  The Seawolves and Gators will tip off at 5:30 p.m. from the Main Gymnasium in San Francisco.
