SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Garrett Gooselaw smacked two home runs -- a two-run shot in the first inning of game one and a solo bomb to lead off the second inning in game two -- but the Sonoma State baseball team was forced to split the Saturday doubleheader with host Cal State San Bernardino at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino.  With the 4-2 loss in the opener and the 5-3 win in the nightcap, the Seawolves move to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA.  The Coyotes go to 4-4 and 1-2 in conference action.

Game One: Cal State San Bernardino 4, Sonoma State 2 (box score)

It was a quick start by the Seawolves in the opener as Gooselaw put two runs up on the scoreboard with a two-run home run, scoring Steven Filippi.  The lead wouldn't last long, however, as the Coyotes came right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first on a bases loaded fielder's choice and an error by SSU catcher Kevin Cramer.

The bats by both squads would fall silent for the next three innings until Cal State San Bernardino broke the 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth.  The Coyotes then added an insurance run in their half of the sixth to take the 4-2 lead.

Sonoma State just couldn't get anything going offensively after the two-run shot by Gooselaw in the first.  The Seawolves managed just three hits the rest of the way against four different Coyote pitchers.  Cory Caruso (2-0) went for six innings, striking out nine SSU batters and scattering just four hits.  Kerry Kelly, Tony Guerra and Josh Pond took it the rest of the way, as the three didn't allow hit.

The Seawolves, though, made it interesting in the top of the ninth inning against Pond, as he walked three batters to load the bases with one out.  But, a pop up to the catcher by Gooselaw and a Devon Zenn strikeout would end the game, giving Pond his first save of the season.

Joshua Nervis (0-2) tossed five complete innings for Sonoma State, allowing six hits and three runs, although none of which were earned.  He also walked one and struckout five.  Paul Anaya came on in relief in the sixth; he gave up just one hit and one unearned run, walked one and struckout two.  All four Cal State San Bernardino runs were unearned, as Sonoma State made five defensive errors.

Game Two: Sonoma State 5, Cal State San Bernardino 3 (box score)

The Seawolves again struck first, but this time it was a RBI double by Scott Templeton in the top of the second inning, scoring Gooselaw, who went 4 for 8 in both games on Saturday with three runs scored.

The Coyotes would knot the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third before Gooselaw started an explosive fourth inning for Sonoma State.  Gooselaw led the inning off with a deep fly over the center field fence.  Two batters later, Templeton went yard over the left field fence. Two more batters later, Jeff Johnson went deep over the fence in left field.  Three solo home runs in the Seawolf fourth put SSU on top 4-1.

In the next half inning, Cal State San Bernardino would get a run back on a fielder's choice RBI by Matt Haney to cut the Seawolf lead to 4-2.

Sonoma State put more pressure on the hosts in the sixth, loading the bases with one out.  However, the Seawolves could only get one run across the plate on a sacrifice fly by Johnson that scored Zenn.  SSU would again load the bases on a walk to Joel Thys, but CSUSB got out of the inning with a fly out to left field by Jackson Stogner.

Trailing 5-2 in their last at bat, the Coyotes plated one more run, thanks to an error on Gooselaw at first base, but Michael Garber shut the door to earn his third save of the season.  Taylor Herbert (1-1) got the victory, going five innings, scattering five hits and allowing two runs.  Mike Guglielmo worked in the sixth inning, walking one batter and striking out another.

Gooselaw went 3 for 4 at the plate in game two, with the aforementioned solo shot in the fourth inning.  Templeton was perfect, going 3 for 3 with a pair of RBI's and a run scored (which of course came on his solo home run also in the fourth).

Josh Lee (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Cal State San Bernardino.  He went five and a third innings, allowing six hits, five runs (four earned) while striking out seven.

Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday with a single game starting at 11:00 a.m.
