BOX SCORE Box Score: Cal State San Bernardino 6, Sonoma State 4
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --
Devon Zenn went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI's and
Jackson Stogner scored twice, but host Cal State San Bernardino stunned Sonoma State with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out the 6-4 win over the Seawolves in Sunday's series finale at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino. SSU (4-6, 2-2 CCAA) and CSUSB (5-4, 2-2 CCAA) split the first CCAA series for both teams in 2012.
The Seawolves took advantage of a couple of Coyote miscues in the top of the first inning, scoring a pair of runs to open the game. Stogner, who walked to lead off the game, got to second on an error by first baseman Brandon Day, stole third, then came home on a passed ball by catcher Eric Dow. Zenn came through shortly thereafter, scoring
Justin Serrao on a RBI single to put Sonoma State up 2-0.
Cal State San Bernardino got a run back in its half of the first and threatened for more, as the Coyotes loaded the bases with one out, but SSU starter
Harmen Sidhu got himself out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground ball force out.
After a scoreless second inning by both teams, the Seawolves tacked on two more runs in the third on a
Steven Filippi RBI single and a another RBI single by Zenn.
Trailing 4-1, CSUSB again put the pressure on Sidhu and the SSU defense. With runners on first and second with one out, Darren Dworak singled to right field, but right fielder
Scott Templeton misplayed the ball, allowing Curtis Cassise to score, Matt Winn to move to third and Dworak to second. However, Sidhu again shut the door, striking out two straight batters to end the Coyote third, but Cal State San Bernardino would cut the Seawolf lead to 4-2.
It became a pitcher's duel from that point on, until
Ian Ocon, who came on in relief for Sidhu in the fifth, allowed three runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth to give the Coyotes the 5-4 lead.
Glen Wallace came in for Ocon to stop the bleeding, but Wallace gave up a RBI single and the Seawolves would trail by two at 6-4.
In its last offensive chance, the Sonoma State bats fell cold and CSUSB's Kerry Kelley (1-0) retired the side to earn his first win of the season; Kelley came on in the seventh when SSU led 4-2. He struck out five of the 10 batters he faced. Offensively for the Coyotes, Cassise went 2 for 2 with three walks, two runs scored and an RBI. Dworak went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored and Dow brought home a pair of runs.
For the Seawolves, Zenn had three of the team's six hits on Sunday. Ocon (0-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up the go-ahead run in the eighth. Sidhu scattered four hits, allowed two runs (one earned) while walking five and striking out five in his four innings of work.
Sonoma State will look toward next weekend when it plays a home-and-home series with Cal State East Bay. The Seawolves and Pioneers will play a doubleheader in Hayward on Friday, starting at 12:00 p.m., before the two teams relocate to Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park on Saturday to finish the series with another twinbill, starting at 11:00 a.m.
