Game 2
HAYWARD, Calif.- Sonoma State hit four home runs on Friday afternoon en route to a doubleheader sweep of Cal State East Bay in CCAA softball action in Hayward. The Seawolves had to sweat a little for a 9-7 win in the opener before rolling to a 9-0 victory in game two.
Shannon Kehr had two of those homers and eight RBIs on the day as the Seawolves improve to 10-3, 3-3 CCAA.
Samantha Lipperd fired a two-hit shutout in the nightcap to drop the Pioneers to 9-9, 3-7 CCAA on the season.
Game One: Currie, Kehr Power Seawolves Past Pioneers In Opener
Vanessa Currie and
Shannon Kehr combined for four doubles and two home runs in game one as Sonoma State provided enough offense to withstand a late Cal State East Bay rally. It was the Pioneers jumping out in front after one, as they answered a first inning Sonoma State score with two of their own in the bottom of the frame.
The Seawolves got one run back in the second, on an RBI double by Kehr, but in the third inning, they really got going. After a single by Currie,
Skylynn Myers reached on an error, and
Megan Konieczka walked to set up a bases loaded one out opportunity for Kehr. The Petaluma native didn't waste it. Kehr blasted a grand slam to center field to bolster an already staggering offensive stat line.
After the Pioneers plated two in the bottom of the third, Currie scored another run for Sonoma in the fourth, to push the lead to 7-4. Two more runs crossed the dish in the fifth, giving the Seawolves a 9-4 lead before the Pioneers made things a bit interesting with three in the sixth.
Following a six-inning start from
Ciara Becerril, Coach Bridges turned to
Samantha Lipperd, who retired the side in the seventh to preserve the win and earn her first save of the season.
Currie finished the game 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Kehr was 3-for-4 with two runs and five RBIs and Danielle D'Eccliss had a pair of singles as well.
Jamie Yaller led the Pioneers with three hits.
Game Two: Lipperd And Long Balls Result In Friday Afternoon Sweep
Just like in game one, the Sonoma State offense came ready to play in game two, scoring nine runs on nine hits. As it turned out, they didn't need it all. All-American
Samantha Lipperd was simply dominating, yielding just two hits and striking out eight in a shutout effort as the Seawolves rolled, 9-0.
After three scoreless innings, the Sonoma offense sprang to life in the third when
Ali Palermo skied a three-run home run to left field. It was the fourth home run of the season for Palermo and the school-record 21st of her career.
Leading 3-0, the Seawolves piled on four more runs in the fourth, three of them coming on a three-run bomb from Kehr, giving her eight runs batted in for the day.
Skylynn Myers was responsible for the other run as she drove in D'Eccliss on a double down the left field line.
Sonoma State scored their final two runs in the seventh when Palermo singled to left field to drive in two.
Palermo had a huge game, going 2-for-4 and driving in five. D'Eccliss had two hits and Kehr scored three and drove in three. After Friday's doubleheader, Kehr has compiled seven hits this season. Those five hits? Just five home runs and a pair of doubles, good enough for an .889 slugging percentage.
Up Next: The Seawolves and Pioneers will play another doubleheader tomorrow in Hayward. Sonoma State needs just one win to wrap up the series victory, but they'll be gunning for their third straight season sweep of Cal State East Bay. In all, Sonoma has won 15 straight against the Pioneers.
