ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- After a frustrating 3-2 loss in game one, where Sonoma State left 11 runners on base, the Seawolves' offense woke up to score 10 runs in the first four innings to win game two, 10-2 in five innings, forcing a non-conference doubleheader split with visiting Notre Dame de Namur on Tuesday at the Seawolf Softball Field. Sonoma State moves to 13-4 this season and Notre Dame de Namur goes to 10-5.
Game One: Notre Dame de Namur 3, Sonoma State 2 (box score)
Neither team would allow a run until Sonoma State finally broke through for a run in the fifth. However, up until that point, the Seawolves had their chances to break open for more. In the first,
Ancia Purdy led off with a single,
Vanessa Currie singled two batters later and both moved up to third and second base, respectively, all with just one out. However, Purdy was forced out on a fielder's choice by
Skylynn Myers and
Shannon Kehr fouled out to end the inning, stranding two runners.
Then, in the fourth inning, the Seawolves threatened again, this time loading the bases with one out. But, Notre Dame de Namur starter Sammy McConvey pitched herself out of the jam, forcing
Samantha Beauchamp and
Ali Palermo to popup in the infield, leaving the bases loaded.
In the fifth, Myers finally brought a run home to end the scoreless tie on a single to center field, plating Danielle D'Eccliss for the 1-0 lead. It wouldn't last long, though, as NDNU's Meggan Craviotto blasted a three-run home run over the left field fence to give the Argonauts the 3-1 lead.
Once again, in the sixth, Sonoma State had two runners on and an infield single by Purdy had everyone safe to lead the bases, but Konieczka overslid third base after reaching it safely, giving the Argonauts the opportunity to tag her out and end the inning. In the SSU seventh, the Seawolves cut the deficit to one at 3-2 when, on a first and third situation, Kehr stole second, but the attempt to throw Kehr out glanced off the glove of second baseman Shay Shibata, allowing Currie to scamper home from third.
Samantha Lepp was then hit by the pitch, putting runners on first and second, but McConvey struck out Beauchamp to end the game.
Despite giving up 10 hits and three walks, Notre Dame de Namur's McConvey (5-1) earned the victory.
Ciara Becerril fell to 4-3 as the pitcher of record, even though she allowed just three hits. She also walked four and struckout four, but gave up the three-run home run that ended up being the difference of the game. Sonoma's Myers was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Purdy was also 2 for 4.
Game Two: Sonoma State 10, Notre Dame de Namur 2 -- 5 innings (box score)
It didn't take long for the Seawolves to respond in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning, six runs in the second inning and two runs in the fourth inning. The only time that Sonoma State ran into trouble was in the third, when two defensive errors allowed Notre Dame de Namur to score a pair of runs, which at that point, cut the Seawolf lead to 8-2. The two runs in the fourth gave SSU the eight-run lead and
Samantha Lipperd shut the door on NDNU in the fifth to induce the eight-run mercy rule after five innings.
Lipperd improves to 9-1 this season. She gave up just three hits and the two unearned runs while striking out six batters. Offensively, Konieczka went 2 for 3 with four RBI's, Myers went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored and Purdy went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Currie, Kehr and Palermo also recorded RBI's in the victory.
The Argonauts' Hillary Ruddick (5-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing eight hits, ten runs (although only four were earned), while walking three and striking out four.
Sonoma State will return to CCAA action on Friday and Saturday when it plays host to Humboldt State.
