BOX SCORE
LA JOLLA, Calif.- Facing the nation's top-ranked team for the second time in four days, the Sonoma State women's basketball team came up on the short end of a 70-53 decision to UC San Diego in the opening round of the CCAA Championship Tournament at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla. Like last Friday's game, the Seawolves hung with the heavily favored Tritons well into the second half before a 10-0 run gave the home team the surge they needed. The loss ends the Seawolves' campaign at 11-16 overall. UC San Diego goes to 28-1 and will continue on to the CCAA Semifinals.
While the result might not have gone the way the Seawolves' would have liked, they wouldn't leave La Jolla without a major milestone occuring, as
Aly Conway blocked four shots to pass Shelley Chambers (1989-92) on the all-time list. Playing in her final collegiate game, Conway wrapped up her career with 57 blocked shots.
UC San Diego came out strong, jetting to a 9-4 lead in the first four and a half minutes. The Seawolves, however, would not go away, eventually taking the lead two and a half minutes later on a layup by
Taylor Vigil.
The Tritons would regain the upper hand, but the Seawolves would stay close, trailing by just four at the half, 29-25.
Down just two points, 42-40 with 14:54 left, the Seawolves certainly had the home crowd feeling a bit nervous. However, a 10-0 run over the next four minutes turned a two-point deficit into a 12-point deficit, and put Sonoma on their heels. While the Seawolves would get the lead under ten at one point, with 6:43 to go, a 13-2 run put the game away for the Tritons.
In addition to the aforementioned blocks, Conway tied a career-high with 15 rebounds, including seven off the offensive glass.
Bronte Sheahan had ten points to lead the offense and
Aly Henington went for nine.
Daisy Feder had a big night for the Tritons, finishing with 23 points. Chelsea Carlisle had 16 points and eight assists in another fine effort.
Friday's action marked the final collegiate game for three Sonoma State seniors: Conway, Henington, and
Jaclyn Bisordi. Bisordi scored six to wind up tied for ninth on the all-time list with 869 career points.
