HAYWARD, Calif-  Junior Steven Filippi had four hits, including a triple, to pace Sonoma State's 11-hit attack on Saturday as the Seawolves knocked off Cal State East Bay, 6-2, in the season opener for both teams at Pioneer Field in Hayward.  Dating back to 2001, Saturday's victory marked the 12th straight season that the Sonoma State baseball team has opened with a win.

The Seawolves wasted little time getting on the board as Jackson Stogner walked to lead off the game, then came around to score on Filippi's first hit of the contest, a single to right.  The Pioneers countered in their half of the inning, only to see the Seawolves go up 2-1 in the third on a Garrett Gooselaw RBI single.

After a run in the fifth by Cal State East Bay knotted things again, the Seawolves grabbed hold of the game with two-run six, highlighted by a solo home run from Devon Zenn and an RBI infield single by Filippi.

Insurance runs were added in the seventh and ninth to aid a stellar relief effort as the Seawolves beat their CCAA rivals for the seventh time in the last nine meetings.

Harmen Sidhu got the start for the Seawolves and he pitched well, striking out three and allowing just four hits and a run in four innings.  Thomas Lee pitched the next four innings, earning the win after yielding just three hits and a run.  A perfect ninth inning by Mike Garber capped off the Seawolves' strong pitching performance.

Though the season is young, the move from leadoff to the No. 3 spot in the lineup for Filippi has already shown returns.  The Sonoma Valley High School product was 4-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.  Gooselaw and Paul Anaya were each 2-for-4 and Zenn scored a pair of runs.  In all, the Seawolves had 11 hits in the game.

Cal State East Bay got a pair of hits from Bryson Nakamura and Jordan Wilder.

The Seawolves will host GNAC powerhouse Western Oregon next week in a big five-game west region series.  The Wolves have won the last ten GNAC titles.  The series will kick off with a single game on Wednesday, to be followed by doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday.
