ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --
Scott Collins went 1 for 3 with a run scored and
Marcus Kimura had a RBI, but the Sonoma State offense was held in check by Western Oregon starting pitcher Grady Wood, who gave up just four hits in eight innings of work, helping the 25th-ranked Wolves defeat the hometown Seawolves, 10-1, in Wednesday's home opener at Seawolf Diamond. After winning the season-opener last Saturday, SSU falls to 1-1 this season. WOU, however, has won three straight to improve to 4-1.
Sonoma State starter
Joshua Nervis got off to a quick start, striking out the side on three straight batters, but Western Oregon's Wood also retired the Seawolves in order. It was in the second inning when WOU broke out for four runs against Nervis, including a two-run home run by Quinn Naughtin. Nervis calmed down in the third and fourth innings and ended up fanning nine of the 18 Western Oregon batters he faced.
The Seawolves would get a run back in their bottom half of the third inning when Collins reached on an infield single with one out. A single by
Justin Serrao put runners on first and second, then
Jackson Stogner reached on a fielding error by WOU shortstop Blake Miller. With the bases loaded, Kimura hit a soft grounder right to the first baseman Bo Folkinga, but it was soft enough to get Collins home from third.
It would be the closest Sonoma State would get to scoring another run, as Wood (2-0) allowed just two more hits by the Seawolves the rest of the way, including singles by
Joel Thys and
Steven Filippi in the fourth and eighth innings, respectively.
Western Oregon tacked on another four runs in its half of the fifth inning, then plated a run in the seventh and again in the ninth to cruise to the 10-1 win. Both Nervis (0-1) and
Matt Manfre gave up four runs apiece in the loss.
Sonoma State will look to rebound on Thursday, when it again hosts Western Oregon for a doubleheader, starting at 11:00 a.m., part of the five-game series between the two west region powers at Seawolf Diamond.
