No. 25 Western Oregon Takes Thursday Twinbill From Sonoma

Steven Filippi had an RBI double for Sonoma State in game one.
BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Led by dominant starting pitching, the Western Oregon baseball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Sonoma State on Thursday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park.  The Wolves also excelled on offense, using the big inning to their advantage, as they cruised to 9-1 and 7-1 victories.  The wins push the 25th-ranked Wolves to 5-1 on the season while the Seawolves drop to 1-3.

GAME ONE:  Western Oregon 9, Sonoma State 1  (Box Score)

There's no way around it.  Thursday started out ominously for Sonoma State as the Wolves jumped on starter Joey Van Cleave for six runs in the first.  Following a strikeout to open the game, Western Oregon's next seven batters reached base.  Highlights during the big inning included a two-run double by Grant Mascolo and run-scoring doubles from Griffin Boyd and Kyle Blackwell.

Trailing 7-0, Sonoma State picked up its only run of the game in the third when Steven Filippi laced a double to left center to plate Jackson Stogner.  Other than that minor outburst, the Seawolves were held in check by the Wolves' Jason Wilson, who struck out ten and allowed just four hits in seven strong innings.

One highlight for Sonoma State was a fine relief appearance from Paul Anaya.  The senior righthander threw three and two-thirds of an inning, allowing no runs, a hit and striking out five.

GAME TWO:  Western Oregon 7, Sonoma State 1  (Box Score)

Game two was a different story...for a while.  Both starting pitchers, Taylor Herbert for Sonoma and Travis Bradshaw for Western Oregon- were impressive in the early going.  Herbert struck out nine through four and a third and was effective at keeping the WOU batters off balance.  However, as was the case in the opener and on Friday, the Seawolves proved susceptible to the big inning.

Following Herbert's ninth strikeout of the game, Western Oregon pieced together a pair of hits, including a two-run double by Josh Solemsaas.  Then things got a little crazy.  Coach Goelz turned to ace Thomas Lee to stop the bleeding and he did his job, yielding a sacrifice bunt and then striking out the next batter he faced.  However on the strikeout, the ball got away from the catcher, Kyle Cerrudo and his throw down to first sailed all the way down into the corner, allowing Solemsaas and the batter to score.

A single would follow, then an error, and another two-run single and all of a sudden, Sonoma trailed 6-0.

Sonoma State's lone run of the game came in the seventh and final inning, when Scott Templeton knocked in Devon Zenn on a single.

Bradshaw finished the game with seven strikeouts and no walks to earn his second victory of the season.

Zenn posted a pair of hits to lead the Sonoma State attack.

UP NEXT:  The Seawolves will try to rebound tomorrow when they host Western Oregon in a series concluding doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 11:00 am and the action will be broadcast on the Seawolf Sports Network.
