Baseball Scores Extra-Inning Victory Over Toros In Opener

Devon Zenn went 2 for 5 with an RBI in Friday's win over the Toros.
BOX SCORE Box Score: Sonoma State 3, Cal State Dominguez Hills 2 (10 innings)

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- In the bottom of the 10th inning and with two outs, Scott Templeton singled up the middle and then stole second before Jeff Johnson brought him home on an RBI single, lifting the Sonoma State baseball team to a 3-2 win in extra innings on Friday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond.  The Seawolves improve to 9-6 overall and 7-2 in the CCAA.  Meanwhile, the Toros fall to 4-9 and 2-7 in conference play.

It was an entertaining first inning by both teams offensively, as the Toros plated a run in the top of the first on an RBI double by Drew Rodela.  But, with a runner on third and just one out, SSU starter Thomas Lee pitched himself out of the jam, striking out Sako Chapjian and inducing an inning-ending groundout by Ricky Vasquez.

In the bottom of the first, the Seawolves struck back for a pair of runs, thanks to an RBI single by Devon Zenn and a wild pitch by CSUDH starter Sean Wardour that allowed Steven Filippi to scamper home from third.

Both starting pitchers settled down the rest of the way, minus the run given up by Lee in the fifth; an RBI single by Matthew Young.  Lee would be replaced by Michael Garber in the eighth, but not before Lee allowed just three hits and the two unearned runs, while striking out 12 Toros.

Wardour would give up just about the same stats, in terms of hits and runs, but he would walk four and strike out eight Seawolves.

Sonoma State made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, as Justin Serrao and Jackson Stogner would get on base with just one out.  However, Jonathan Boersma shut the door on Jeff Boulware and Filippi to force extra frames.

After a 1-2-3 inning for Garber in the tenth, Templeton singled with two outs, then later came around to score on a single by Johnson.  Garber improved to 2-0 for the Seawolves this season; he scattered just two hits and struckout four in three innings of relief work.  Cal State Dominguez Hills' Boersma (0-2) allowed six hits and the game-winning run in the 10th.

Offensively, Zenn led the way for SSU, going 2 for 5 at the plate with the RBI in the first inning.  Stogner also went 2 for 5 in the win.  For the Toros, Young accounted for two of the five hits by the visitors.

Sonoma State and Cal State Dominguez Hills will return to action on Saturday in a doubleheader, starting at 11:00 a.m. at Seawolf Diamond.  The two squads will then wrap up the four-game series on Sunday.
