ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Pitting two of the CCAA's best offenses against each other, you'd expect a lot of runs to cross the plate. In fact, Friday's doubleheader was the exact opposite. Sonoma State pitchers
Samantha Lipperd and
Ciara Becerril combined to allow just three hits in 14 innings and the Seawolves would only need one run in each game to defeat visiting Humboldt State by identical scores of 1-0. SSU improves to 15-4 overall and 6-3 in conference play. HSU, meanwhile, falls to 7-12 (1-9 CCAA).
Game One: Sonoma State 1, Humboldt State 0 (box score)
It was a pitcher's duel in game one between Sonoma State's Lipperd and Humboldt State's Kayla Evans. However, it would be Lipperd that made one less mistake, to go along with 11 strikeouts while allowing just one hit the entire game. Evans' mistake came in the bottom of the first inning, giving up an RBI double to
Vanessa Currie that scored Danielle D'Eccliss from third -- D'Eccliss hit a double of her own and stole third prior to Currie's double to right center field.
Lipperd (10-1) cruised through the Lumberjack lineup, only allowing the one hit to Dani Randall in the fourth; a double to left center field that hit just a couple of feet from clearing the fence. However, the All-American junior from Boulder Creek was faced with a bases-loaded, one-out situation, but struckout Courtney Hiatt and forced Sarah Fox to groundout to
Shannon Kehr at second base. It was the only time a Lumberjack runner got into scoring position the rest of the way.
After the one run on three hits in the bottom of the first inning, the Seawolf bats fell silent, only recording two more hits the rest of the way on Evans (3-6). In the end, though, Currie's RBI double held up as the eventual game-winning hit.
Game Two: Sonoma State 1, Humboldt State 0 (box score)
Just like in game one, game two quickly became another pitcher's duel, but this time, Becerril faced off with Jessica George. When the dust settled, it was Becerril (5-3) that came out on top, as the sophomore allowed just two base hits, the first of which didn't even come until the fifth inning. It was the only two base runners Becerril allowed in her seven innings of work.
Sonoma State got their one and only run in the fourth when
Shannon Kehr reached base on a fielder's choice with two outs. After Kehr advanced to second base when
Samantha Lepp got hit by the pitch, Kehr then took off for third. When HSU catcher Hiatt threw down to third to try and catch Kehr stealing, nobody was there to cover the base and the ball trickled into left field, allowing Kehr to score the run; the only one of the game. George (2-4) allowed only three Sonoma State hits in her six innings of work, but the one unearned run in the fourth was enough for her to get the loss. She ended with three walks and five strikeouts.
Skylynn Myers,
Samantha Beauchamp and
Keisi Chinen accounted for the only hits by the Seawolves in the nightcap. Felicia Viveiros and Randall recorded the only two for the 'Jacks.
Both teams will be back at it again on Saturday when Sonoma State and Humboldt State play games three and four of the four-game series. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the Seawolf Softball Field.
