ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Sonoma State pounded out 16 runs on 20 hits and three pitchers combined to allow just two hits, helping the Seawolves to a 16-0 pounding of Cal State Dominguez Hills in the series finale on Sunday at Seawolf Diamond. SSU has won eight straight games has swept two conference series' in a row, improving to 12-6 overall and 10-2 in the CCAA. The victory puts 27th-year head coach
John Goelz one win away from No. 900, the sixth most wins amongst active coaches in Division II.
It was clear from the start that the Seawolves would run away with the win, scoring all of their runs in the first six innings, including eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to post the eventual game-winning score of 16-0.
The Sonoma State offense got started when
Jackson Stogner reached on an error, then
Evan Warner put down a bunt single and
Steven Filippi singled to right field, loading the bases with no outs.
Devon Zenn came up and delivered an RBI single, scoring Stogner, before Warner scored on a double play that
Garrett Gooselaw was forced into.
In the second, two more runs came around to score, thanks to RBI singles by Stogner and Warner. Another run came across the plate in the third on an RBI double by
Justin Serrao to put SSU up 5-0. The Seawolves then tacked on three more runs in the fourth on a couple of home runs by Filippi and Gooselaw to put the score at 8-0.
After a scoreless fifth, the Seawolves brought 13 men to the plate, scoring eight runs on seven hits and an error; the error is what plagued Cal State Dominguez Hills. Had the Toros' Ellis Whitman not dropped a routine fly ball in left field with two outs, Sonoma State would have only plated one run, but the flood gates opened for the Seawolf offense, as they rallied for six hits to add seven more runs to the scoreboard and put the game out of reach at 16-0.
