BOX SCORE Box Score: Patten 13, Sonoma State 3
OAKLAND, Calif. --
Evan Warner came off the bench and went 1 for 2 with a walk, a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored, but Sonoma State made eight defensive errors that allowed nine unearned runs to cross the plate in Wednesday's 13-3 non-conference loss to Patten University in Oakland. The loss puts the Seawolves at 12-7 this season, stalling head coach
John Goelz's chance for 900 wins. With 899 career coaching victories, Goelz will have to opportunity to earn No. 900 against his alma mater, San Francisco State, on Saturday at Noon in San Francisco.
The Lions, a baseball-playing member of the Cascade Collegiate Conference in the NAIA, improves to 5-10 this season.
Patten drew first blood in the bottom of the first, plating three runs against SSU starter
Matt Manfre. Jesse Madrid brought home two runs on a single through the right side, then Isaac Duran brought home a run two batters later to lead 3-0. The Lions added to their lead in the fifth with a pair of runs, moving the score to 5-0.
The Seawolves finally put a run across the plate in the sixth inning, but without the benefit of a base hit. Warner walked to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a groundout by
Kevin Cramer, stole third, then came home on a sacrifice fly by
Scott Collins.
Trailing by four runs at 5-1, Sonoma State began to struggle defensively, recording three errors that allowed five Patten base runners to score, all of which were unearned. An inning later, the Seawolves made three more defensive errors and the Lions took advantage by scoring three more runs to lead 13-1.
After two quick outs in the top of the ninth, SSU strung together several base hits, including a double by
Joel Thysand an infield single by
Garrett Schwartz. Warner then came up and delivered an RBI single to center field, scoring Thys and moving Schwartz to third. However, on the throw home to keep Schwartz from advancing further, Patten got Warner trapped in a rundown between first and second and, while the Lions tried tagging Warner, Schwartz took off for home and beat the throw, which accounted for the Seawolves' third run of the game. It would be all Sonoma State would get, as Patten got
Kevin Cramer to fly out to end the game.
Manfre (0-1) was tagged with the loss for giving up the three runs in the first; he went two innings in his first collegiate start and gave up five hits, walked one and struckout one.
Kyle Stahl,
Timothy Perreira,
Graham Rodriguez,
Joey Van Cleave,
Glen Wallace and
Mike Guglielmo all saw action on the mound for SSU.
The Seawolf offense also saw a few different arms -- six to be exact. Jason Kellar (1-3) came on in relief in the fourth for Patten starter Duran and got the victory, tossing two innings of shutout ball. Lions pitchers allowed nine hits, all by nine different Sonoma State batters.
Sonoma State will play San Francisco State on Saturday in San Francisco for one non-conference game. First pitch at Maloney Field is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
